Russell Woolard
As a writer and reporter over the last 20 years, Washington, N.C., native Russell Woolard has walked nearly a mile to work through knee-deep water, had a front-row seat at some of the nation's most prestigious sporting events, visited the basement communications center of the Pentagon and written about the aftermath of September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks - an impressive list for someone who describes himself as a "born news junkie."
In the early 1980s, Woolard attended Beaufort County Community College, where he took classes in the college transfer program. He received a bachelor's degree in political science from East Carolina University in 1987. Woolard earned awards from the N.C. Press Association for his sports writing in 1991 and business writing in 1998.
In 2001, Woolard joined the staff of The MITRE Corporation, a not-for-profit organization that works on public interest issues, primarily for various agencies of the federal government. In 2003, he was honored by the International Association of Business Communicators with an award for feature writing.
"BCCC gave someone like me - a kid who wasn't quite ready for prime time - a place to continue my education and get a taste of what awaited me at a four-year institution,” he said. “The instructors there always had time for me and they spotted potential in me long before I saw it in myself.”
