Susan Caines
Susan Caines is finally realizing a dream she has had for more than 30 years, to complete a college degree. She credits the availability and flexibility provided through the North Carolina Community College's constituent institutions for giving her that opportunity.
Caines attended a nearby community college for one year after high school, but dropped out to get married—a decision she says she still regrets. She became involved in making the family business successful, later became a cancer victim, and let her dream fall by the wayside.
Just before her 50th birthday, she “mustered the courage” to return to school and enrolled in the Business Administration program at Bladen Community College. She had to repeat virtually everything she had taken in college before but did not let it discourage her. She says the community college “setting was perfect for her.” It allowed her to take the courses she needed without impacting her work in the family business.
She will soon complete her associate degree and plans to continue her education at a university afterward. She says she plans to share her education “by volunteering with children who need tutoring” in her community.
