Ricky Smith

Ricky Smith Like so many other North Carolina residents, Ricky Smith found himself working in an industry that offered little, if any, job security. But through perseverance and additional training at Bladen Community College, he has found a job that offers not only better job security, but more job satisfaction.

A native of Bladen County and 1983 graduate of Bladenboro High School, Smith had very little interest in continuing his education after high school. Instead, like so many others in the area, he went to work in the textile industry. He worked as a floor mechanic for the next 21 years until his last employer, M.J. Soffe, closed its plant in Bladenboro.

Married and a father of three, he needed to work, but also wanted to find a job that offered more security. With Trade Readjustment Act (TRA) benefits, he enrolled at Bladen Community College in the Industrial Systems Technology program.

In November 2007, almost six months before he graduated, he was hired by the town of Elizabethtown in its Public Works Division. He is now an assistant supervisor in the Water and Sewer Division of the department. He is a champion of the opportunities available through the North Carolina Community College System.
