Alice Wynn
As a teenager coming of age in Plymouth, N.C., Alice Wynn dreamed of a career in medicine. She was not only fascinated with the science and anatomy on such television programs as ER and CSI, but also driven by a desire to help people.
In 2006, it was the Medical Laboratory Technology program at Beaufort County Community College that helped Wynn fulfill her dream. It was then that Wynn began work in the laboratory at Bertie Memorial Hospital along with three other BCCC graduates. They performed a variety of medical tests that help the hospital's doctors diagnose and treat diseases and maintain the health of their patients.
When a patient comes into the hospital, it's Wynn, or one of her fellow laboratory technicians, who performs the needed laboratory tests prescribed by the hospital doctors. She and others in the lab cross-match blood when it's needed for a transfusion and perform routine maintenance checks on equipment in the lab. “I learned how to do all of this at BCCC,” she said. “I thought of it as an investment in the future,” she said of her MLT studies. “I've come from having nothing to having something. I'm able to do more things to help my family.”
