Mary Warren
Mary Warren graduated from the Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College Criminal Justice Technology program with honors two years after completing her GED at the College.
As a student in a First-Year Seminar class, Warren took part in a Service-Learning Project of volunteer work that led to a paper being published in Explorations, the Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities for the State of North Carolina.
"I was reluctant about volunteering. I have a husband, children, and grandchildren to care for. I belong to a church. I had six courses with homework," Warren said. "My time was already filled to capacity, or so I thought."
Warren was required to volunteer in the community for only four hours. However, once she started participating as a volunteer, she realized it was a calling. She chose to volunteer at Eliada Homes because she loves to work with teens. She continues to volunteer long after the class finished and she found her dream job working for a non-profit with children.
“I always had a passion for teens at risk. I became concerned about teens when I visited my son's middle school. I saw teens that were in trouble and knew I was needed. The community improves when an enthusiastic person becomes a role model in the lives of others. Volunteering can be a great reward,” Warren said.
