William Spruill
When William Spruill was laid off in 2006 from Weyerhaeuser' pulp and paper mill in Plymouth after more than 40 years with the company, he needed to start over. Beaufort County Community College was there to help.
Spruill enrolled at BCCC and began taking classes in a “Mini-Mester” format. These intensive classes are held over a shorter period of time than a traditional semester, and were arranged by BCCC, in part, to give people like Spruill the opportunity to begin re-training quickly without having to wait for the start of a new semester.
Spruill is currently enrolled in BCCC's Computer Information Technology Program and is scheduled to graduate in May, 2009. He is a native of Washington County and lives on the family farm in a house built by his great-grandfather. A graduate of Plymouth High School, Spruill was afraid he had forgotten too much in the decades since graduation for him to succeed in college. He was also concerned that a residual hearing loss sustained while he was in the military would prevent him from succeeding at BCCC. But meetings arranged with his instructors helped allay his fears.
“I have enjoyed this thoroughly,” Spruill said of his return to school. “The people at BCCC are very good to work with.” He is optimistic about his future after he graduates. “I will have credentials,” he said. “And I will be able to take a lot to my new job.”
