Timothy Baynes
Oxford native Timothy M. Baynes enrolled at a four-year university after graduating from J.F. Webb High School in 1991. But, as he later said, “Nothing was right.” His major was not the right fit, and the tuition was high. Baynes returned home and decided to enroll in the accounting program at VGCC. He found “the costs minimal, the curriculum challenging, and the instructors qualified and caring.” The VGCC Career Center helped him get a part-time job so that he could support his education.
Baynes excelled in the classroom and became involved in many campus activities. When officials of Lace Lastics, Inc. contacted the college looking for someone to work in their accounting office, Baynes was referred. He joined the firm as a part-time accounting clerk in 1993, and after his graduation in August 1994 worked his way up to accounting manager. Meanwhile, he completed a bachelor's degree in accounting at a branch of N.C. Wesleyan College. Baynes later became accounting services manager for Granville County and then finance director for the Kerr-Tar Regional Council of Governments. In 2006 he was promoted to executive director of the COG. As executive director, he has sought ways to work with VGCC to meet the needs of the communities he serves.
“VGCC helped me to get my life back on track,” Baynes said. “I figured out what my career path should be, as a result of getting my degree from VGCC. My education also made me realize there's more out there, and it allowed me to be able to give back to the community.”
