Tim Bradley

Tim Bradley Tim Bradley, a Mebane resident, is recipient of the 2009 Alamance Community College Distinguished Alumnus award. He is senior deputy insurance commissioner and assistant state fire marshal for the state of North Carolina. He is also in his fourth term on the Mebane City Council.

He believes in staying involved and giving back. “If someone has something they can offer to a community, then I feel they should. Volunteering is what built America,” says Bradley.

Bradley graduated from Technical Institute of Alamance, which became Alamance Community College, in 1976 with an associate in applied science degree in engineering. After 11 years in the engineering industry, he went to work for the state of North Carolina. As senior deputy commissioner of insurance, Bradley serves in one of the state's highest non-elected positions in state government.

Since earning his degree at the college, Bradley has continued to pursue training in emergency services. “Staying involved …allows me to keep a valuable perspective of where the rubber meets the road,” he says. His job gives him supervision over the state's fire and rescue services. He led his staff to develop certification standards and coursework leading to hundreds of training hours in the 58 North Carolina community colleges, and the certification of more than 33,000 fire and rescue personnel.

Bradley also has first-hand responsibility in educating first responders. At Alamance Community College, he has served on the Fire Protection Advisory Committee for 14 years, and has taught several classes under that program. He currently teaches Introduction to Fire Protection Law.

“Teaching for the community college also grants me and opportunity to give back some of what I gained from attending there, combined with life experience,” says Bradley. “I think one of the greatest attributes anyone wanting to be a leader needs to emulate is that of passing on what you've learned so that those who come behind you start at a higher point.”

For more than 35 years, he has served with the Mebane Fire Department, including seven years as chief. He received the Firefighter of the Year Award for North Carolina in 2003 and a national heroism award in 2006 for rescuing a child from a burning building. Bradley has stayed in touch with the young boy and is proud to report that child has recovered from the burns he sustained before he was rescued. Now, that young boy teaches others about fire safety, extending Bradley's mission.
