Jonathan Yates
“The faculty and staff at HCC were very personable,” says Jonathan Yates, '95 Horticulture Technology graduate. “They were as concerned about my future as I was. I mattered to them personally.”
Jonathan Yates, Town of Waynesville Horticulturist, came to Haywood Community College to enroll in the Forestry program but was naturally drawn to the Horticulture Complex. He already had studied four years of horticulture in high school.
Since starting his job in 2005, Jonathan has won and maintained the town's designation as a Tree City USA from the Arbor Day Foundation and created a tree identification marker program. Recently, he completed qualifications to become a certified arborist through the International Society of Arboriculture.
After completing the degree at HCC, Jonathan continued his education at Western Carolina University earning a bachelor's degree in Natural Resource Management in 2002.
Jonathan says he enjoys the fact that his job allows him to work outside with plants and to be able to interact with people and hear their feedback.
