Sidney Scales

Sidney Scales When the American Red Cross Bloodmobile recently visited Beaufort County Community College, a BCCC alumnus was among the several blood donor technicians who helped the organization collect more than 73 units of blood.

Baltimore native Sidney Scales, now of Washington, graduated from BCCC in 2000 with an associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology. Since then, he has used that training to establish a successful career with the Red Cross. "I wanted to go into a medical program because that's where the best jobs were and still are," Scales said in an interview during the Blood Drive at BCCC. "I chose Medical Laboratory Technology because I could get in the work force quicker than in other medical professions."

Scales, who has worked for Martin General Hospital and has taught laboratory trainees, said there are a variety of opportunities for work as a medical laboratory technologist. "Once you get that degree, you can go in all kinds of directions," he said. Under the direction of Lead Instructor Art Keehnle, the MLT curriculum at BCCC prepares students to perform various laboratory procedures that are used in diagnosis and treatment of disease and in health maintenance settings. Degree-seeking candidates take courses in anatomy, microbiology, chemistry, various laboratory procedures and general education courses, among others. The curriculum also includes clinical work.

Scales said he made the right decision with his career choice. "I meet a lot of friendly people," he said. "And I get to travel a lot and work with a top-notch crew."
