Faye Turner
Faye Turner was only four months old when her father died, leaving her mother to rear her and her twin brother as a single parent. After graduating from high school in 1973, Faye had to find full-time employment.
For 26 years she worked in the textile industry, the last 20 at the same company. In August 1999, the company moved the operation to Mexico, leaving her jobless and with limited job skills.
After unsuccessfully seeking employment for five months, Turner was convinced to return to school by a Bladen Community College recruiter she encountered while Christmas shopping. Ironically, when she took the computerized placement test, she had never before touched a computer.
With Trade Readjustment Act (TRA) benefits, she enrolled in Office Systems Technology and graduated with honors in May 2002. While at BCC she was a tutor, work study, marshal, and recipient of the Academic Excellence Award. She did her cooperative education at Bladen County Hospital, where she was hired after graduating. She returned to BCC as Assistant to the Registrar in November 2002, a job she has held for more than six years. She is now enrolled in college with the goal of completing a bachelor's degree in business.
