Scott Overton
Scott Overton is an outstanding role model for his automotive technology students in more ways than one. He stays abreast of rapidly changing, computer- driven automotive technology, and three times earned first place national awards on General Motors exams.
Overton scored first in the nation over all other automotive professionals not once, but three times, leading to three prestigious Mark of Excellence Awards. He recently topped 536 professionals taking an on-line transmission exam that included questions for vehicles still being designed and not yet built.
"I feel good that by staying up on the latest research, I get to share with my students information that nobody else knows yet," said Overton, a former high school math teacher and N.C. State graduate. "If I just taught by the book, by the time they get into the field it's going to be outdated."
Overton qualifies for the tests by completing Web-based and hands-on training such as rebuilding a hybrid transmission. He often inspires students to follow in his footsteps and to keep learning . Joe Crowder, a DCCC Motorcycle Mechanics instructor, is one. "Scott Overton inspired me to keep learning and to come back here to teach. He opened the door for me to find a career I really love."
