Dana Swekosky
In 2005, Dana Swekosky opened the doors of Blue Ridge Community College and began her pursuit of higher education. She never imagined those doors would open as far as they did. Behind the first door were scholarships provided through the College's Educational Foundation. Without these scholarships, she would not have been able to complete her education. Through the second door she found one of the College's student clubs, Blue Ink English Club. Dana became editor and earned a reputation as a strong leader and an excellent writer. Through her leadership, the Blue Ink Club created a creative writing contest for the one of the local elementary schools.
When Dana graduated in 2008 with a degree in business administration, she received the James G. Finch Rotary Scholarship Award, a prestigious award given to that year's top graduate. She was recognized that day for her commitment to community service while excelling as a full-time student, coupled with raising three children as a single parent.
Dana is now a successful entrepreneur and credits Blue Ridge faculty and staff for giving her the chance to excel beyond her expectations. "My children have discovered education has no age limit," said Swekosky. "They've learned the importance of school."
