Expected Work Hours

A minimum of a 40-hour work week as determined with the supervisor to allow the employee to fulfill the assigned duties and responsibilities, including occasional evening and weekend hours. Summer schedules may vary to enable four-day or four-and-one-half-day work weeks. Essential Personnel – Essential personnel are employees who, regardless of category, are necessary for operations during states of emergency. This is an essential position.

Recommended disciplines include business administration, operations management, facilities or construction management or related fields. Professional certifications in facilities management, project management, or emergency management (e.g., CEFP, PMP) are a plus.

Candidates should have a minimum of five years of senior leadership and experience in higher education operations, campus management, or a related leadership role.

Position Description

The Assistant Vice President of Campus Operations supports the Vice President, Chief Campus Operations Officer by providing leadership and oversight of key operational functions that sustain the college’s infrastructure and daily operations. The role focuses on financial stewardship, capital and construction planning and direct supervision of auxiliary services at the college.  Working collaboratively across the Campus Operations divisional leadership and the college, the AVP ensures operational effectiveness, compliance, and continuous improvement in support of a safe, efficient, and student-centered campus environment. In the Vice President’s absence, the AVP acts as the Campus Operations Officer, exercising delegated authority to maintain operational effectiveness and institutional continuity.

Examples of Duties

  1. Provide leadership and supervision of auxiliary services at the college including the Durham Tech Café, Bookstore, Print Shop and Vending operations. Ensure the fiscal management and services of these entities are of benefit to the college community.
  2. Provide leadership in capital and construction projects, ensuring effective long range and short-term planning, scheduling, budgeting, and compliance with institutional and regulatory standards. Supports Campus Operations and college leadership in construction operational planning and logistics.
  3. Assist in developing, monitoring, and managing the Campus Operations departmental annual operating and capital budgets, providing financial guidance and support to Campus Operations director-level staff. 
  4. Provide project management oversight of cross-functional operational projects to ensure timely, cost-effective delivery aligned with institutional priorities, regulatory requirements, and campus operational needs.
  1. Assist in human resource matters across the division, including staffing, performance management, and recruitment. Assist Campus Operations director-level staff in ensuring employee development is prioritized and occurs annually, fostering high-performing teams.
  2. Develop and maintain policies and standards aimed at maximizing operational effectiveness and minimizing costs. Ensure that strategic priorities are addressed, goals are met, and obstacles to operations and logistics are eliminated to improve the college community experience.
  3. Provide oversight of the assigned college policies pertaining to Campus Operations and lead the annual review of each to maintain currency.
  4. Assist in evaluating existing technology, facility resources, safety and compliance operations to ensure effective data-informed decision making, planning and continuous improvement. 
  5. Actively participate and provide support for the Emergency Management Team and the college’s Emergency Management planning. Ensure that the college’s Business Continuity Plan meets the requirements of the NCCCS and is updated quarterly. 
  6. Serve as an active leader of the college and participate in a variety of councils, committees and task forces.  Collaborate with academic/student affairs and build partnerships across campus. 
  1. Attend and participate in regularly scheduled Campus Operations Leadership team meetings and retreats.
  2. Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President, Chief Campus Operations Officer.
