Position Description

Statement of Primary Purpose

Responsible for addressing student needs from initial inquiry through program completion, focusing heavily on removing barriers, providing logistical guidance, and ensuring engagement, particularly in the critical early stages and among specific populations in accordance with college policies and the mission of the North Carolina Community College System.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Navigator

The core function of Navigator is empowering students to effectively connect with faculty and internal services. The Navigator is primarily responsible for supporting students in the early stages of their program path by providing direction and individualized attention.

Application and Enrollment Logistics: Assists potential students with administrative steps, including setting up meetings, explaining admission requirements, and facilitating transcript transfers to ensure quick registration.

System Navigation: Teaches students how to use internal college and IT resources, such as MySCC, Moodle, and Self Service.

Coach

This core function of Coach focuses heavily on customer service, managing high volumes of interactions, and guiding new and returning students to appropriate campus resources.

Proactive Coaching and Advising: Provides individualized application coaching and advising through the student’s first year, engaging them in career confirmation or exploration to create a comprehensive plan.

Monitoring Progress and Intervention: Monitors student progress via institutional systems (e.g., Watermark) to track grades, attendance, and alerts. Intervenes based on severity by connecting students to resources like the Learning Assistance Center and accessibility services, while aiding with time management and academic prioritization.

Student Outreach & Success Specialist

The core function of Specialist is to provide a targeted focus on advancing access and student success for underserved and underrepresented populations.

Targeted Outreach: The Specialist develops strategies to promote college programs to churches, K–12 schools, non-profits, and other community settings serving specific populations.

Removing Barriers: The Specialist connects students to support external challenges like food, housing, transportation, and child care. They also interpret division policies affecting retention and completion.

Minimum Qualifications

Education       

Minimum Qualifications: Associate degree with two years’ customer service experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree with relevant professional experience in student support, advising, enrollment or related field.

Knowledge and Skills           

Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.

Software proficiency: productivity software, Watermark, Colleague, Self Service.

Soft skills in interpersonal and organizational communication, and sound judgment.

Physical Demands   

Must be able to lift 30 lbs

Licensing Requirement       

Valid NC Driver’s License

Working Conditions and Environment

In addition to typical office conditions and environment, the Navigator must be able to conduct and manage meetings in distance learning modalities which may include evening and weekend hours.

This position is located at the Jackson Campus but must be able to travel to other locations in the service area.

Equipment Operation

Software programs and routine office/computer equipment.
