Minimum Qualifications

Associate degree in Fire Protection or related field from a regionally accredited institution or a combination of work experience and continuing education classes in Fire and Rescue Services.

Certified by the North Carolina Fire/Rescue Commission as a Fire/Rescue Level II General Instructor

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor degree in Fire Protection or related field from a regionally accredited institution.

At least one instructor qualification from the North Carolina Fire/Rescue Commission (i.e. Firefighter, Driver/Operator, Technical Rescuer, etc.)

Position Description

Job Duties

Develop courses based on assessment of training and educational needs; write course descriptions; schedule courses; submit for prior approval course outlines to appropriate local and state agencies.

Prepare annual budget specific to Fire and Rescue Service needs; monitor expenditures throughout the program year.

Recruit, interview, recommend and supervise part-time instructors; develop contractual service agreements with qualified consultants; recommend liaisons with expert knowledge in special areas of instruction to provide technical assistance, updating and critiquing of courses.

Schedule, develop and assist with in-service training of part-time instructors; meet with instructors’ groups according to teaching specialty to provide program and departmental updates. 

Monitor Emergency Services Training Center and the Burn Lab to insure they are functional and ready for training activities. 

Assist certifying agencies in the development of new programs and procedures.

Work with county agencies in the development, implementation, and delivery of continuing education classes.

Prepare course change forms and assistant instructor forms as needed to ensure proper payment of instructors and accurate reporting of class hours for institutional funding.

Recommend advisory committee members to participate in program review and course recommendations; serve on regional and local advisory committees as required.

Provide State Standard training/testing for certification.

Verify payment of student fees collected by instructors; check course registration and class rolls for accuracy.

Assist in the development of promotional material for specific courses.

Completes inventory for Fire and Rescue Services program areas.

Maintain Fire/Rescue training website.

Visit classes to verify instruction and student attendance.

Monitors course content and instructor methodology.

Evaluates student evaluations for continuous improvement purposes.

Establishes and/or maintains robust, positive partnerships with public safety agencies.

Monitors compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and institutional accreditation.

Identifies needs and develops plans and projections for future academy growth or organizational
improvements.

Planning and organizing the curriculum as approved by the RCC Board of Trustees, the North Carolina
Community College System (NCCCS), and other accrediting and regulatory entities.

Instruction
Developing, with other program faculty and appropriate administration, program level competencies
that outline expected student learning outcomes.

Providing leadership in the development of appropriate assessments of established learning outcomes
for courses taught in the program.

Ordering textbooks, instructional materials, and supplies as needed for instruction following established
procedures.

Developing and recommending class schedules cooperatively with other departments and divisions of
the college and submitting to the appropriate Dean.

Providing timely and accurate reports including 10% census reports, grade reports, and other required
reports related to instruction.

Maintaining posted office hours in accordance with requirements outlined in the faculty workload policy.

Recruiting students for respective program and other programs at RCC.

Serving as an academic advisor to students with advising responsibilities in the assigned program
relative to course requirements, expectations, and completion standards.

Participating in the college’s registration and orientation sessions as assigned.

Attending meetings, conferences, seminars, briefings, and training sessions to expedite the business of
the college.

Attending institutional functions such as graduation, faculty/staff recognition ceremonies, etc. that
promote the collegiate life.

Serving on local, state, regional and/or national committees upon request and/or approval from the
administration.

Serving on college committees as assigned to expedite college business and to be involved in the
decision-making process of the college.

Working a minimum of a 38-hour workweek in accordance with policies outlined in the faculty workload
policy.

Performing other duties as assigned by the Department Chair, Division Dean, Vice-President for Academic Affairs and/or the President of Rockingham Community College.
