Minimum Qualifications

 

Required:

  • Associate degree OR equivalent experience and training
  • Qualified Level II NC Fire and/or Rescue Instructor
  • Minimum five years of experience teaching Fire and/or Technical Rescue classes
  • Working knowledge of the OSFM training requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience managing or instructing Fire/Rescue courses or programs in NC Community Colleges
  • Specialty Qualifications in Fire and/or Technical Rescue
  • Emergency Management certifications
  • National Fire Association certifications
  • Additional National qualifications, certifications and/or designations

Position Description

This position is responsible for the coordination of the Stanly Community College (SCC) Fire, Rescue, Emergency Management, and related programs.  Duties include assurance of compliance with standards as set forth by the Office of the State Fire Marshall (OSFM), NC Emergency Management (NCEM), and related agencies.  This employee is responsible for all facets of accreditation and re-accreditation processes.  In addition, this position advises current and potential students, facilitates classroom and skills sites, maintains necessary records, and evaluates courses and instructors.  Designated as “Fire and Rescue School Director” by OSFM and recognized as a coordinator of other Fire and Rescue training programs by appropriate agencies, this employee reports to the Director of Health and Public Services Workforce Development.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Coordinate Fire, Rescue, and related programs and courses.
  • Teach courses when appropriate and necessary.
  • Learn new material to keep up with changing technology.
  • Facilitate regular and substantive interaction via proactive communication with students.
  • Participate in recruiting efforts for new students.
  • Ensure classrooms, labs, and lab equipment are in good repair and maintain a safe environment for students and employees.
  • Serve as a mentor to students in your area of expertise.
  • Represent the program within the College and community as the primary point of contact.
  • Coordinate advisory boards, program updates, offerings, and scheduling of courses.

 

DUTIES:

  • Planning and implementing programs for the Fire/Rescue Service and related classes
  • Coordinate the review and revision of programs as needed for ongoing national accreditation and state approvals
  • Recommend budget needs for equipment, supplies, and travel
  • Recruit and supervise part-time faculty in Fire/Rescue and related programs. 
  • Support faculty by ensuring timely pay and supplying educational equipment/materials as needed and available.
  • Market programs and courses to existing and potential customers.
  • Maintain a relationship withthe  area Fire and Rescue departments as well as related agencies
  • Plan and implement code qualification (COD) and emergency management (EPT) classes
  • Participate in professional organizations, attend conferences and workshops as appropriate, and maintain professional contacts with colleagues in similar instructional areas at other colleges
  • Advise students on an as-needed basis in relation to academic progress and career goals.
  • Participate in the evaluation and acquisition of instructional materials, audio-visual aids, and equipment needs.
  • Establish course offerings and scheduling for courses.  Advertise/market course availability.
  • Research new opportunities for course and program offerings and ensure the development of quality courses.
  • Provide all necessary documentation to registration and accountability personnel.  Work with office personnel and instructors to develop a streamlined process for accurate FTE reporting.
  • Participate in registration and evaluation activities.  Facilitate the Rescue and related Program Review process.
  • Perform duties relevant to the work described herein.
