Minimum Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, English, math, elementary education, or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in administration or management.
- At least two (2) years of experience in curriculum development, program coordination, and/or educational program development.
- Must be comfortable working within a prison environment and interacting with inmates.
Special Requirements:
- Possession of and ability to maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Must successfully complete all screenings required by MCC and BCI and maintain eligibility to work within Bertie Correctional Institution.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred:
- Teaching experience in a correctional institution.
- Teaching experience in a community college setting.
Position Description
Position Summary
Under limited supervision, the Prison Education Coordinator will serve as a key liaison between Continuing Education/Workforce Development and Curriculum programs and Bertie Correctional Institution (BCI). This role is responsible for coordinating, overseeing, and participating in instructional programs at BCI. Core duties include scheduling classes, supporting instructional personnel, providing academic advising and instruction to inmates, maintaining confidential records, and facilitating the smooth operation of educational programs in collaboration with BCI staff and stakeholders.
This position reports directly to the Vice President, Continuing Education/Workforce Development, with additional administrative oversight from the Director of College and Career Readiness and the Vice President of Academic Affairs/Chief Academic Officer (CAO). The Prison Education Coordinator serves as a liaison for reporting issues related to instructional staff at BCI to Martin Community College (MCC) but does not hold direct supervisory authority over BCI instructional staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Participate in scheduling Continuing Education/Workforce Development and Curriculum classes.
- Assist instructional staff with contracts, handbooks, and class and student evaluations.
- Collaborate with BCI case managers on prospective classes, student inmate waiting lists, prospective student inmate screenings, and program and course selections.
- Support recruiting, retention, enrollment, and registration efforts for student inmates in educational programs at BCI.
- Provide academic advising, counseling, and guidance for student inmates.
- Coordinate program efforts to prepare, update, and maintain student inmate and instructional staff records.
- Arrange for substitute instructors across College and Career Readiness (CCR), Continuing Education/Workforce Development, and Curriculum areas when necessary.
- Maintain clear and organized records in alignment with institutional guidelines.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions with BCI staff, MCC personnel, and student inmates, ensuring compliance with MCC and BCI policies, procedures, as well as federal and state regulations.
- Prepare and maintain confidential personnel and student inmate files and instructional program schedules.
- Compile, compose, and distribute program reports in compliance with MCC and BCI institutional policies.
- Act as a point of contact for BCI-related inquiries, resolving issues, responding to complaints in a timely and confidential manner.
- Collect attendance and grading forms, review membership hours, and submit census rosters to the appropriate MCC Registrar.
- Fifty percent (50%) of workload will be instruction.
- Assist with the recruitment and selection of Continuing Education and Workforce Development instructors.
- Serve as the primary contact between instructional staff and MCC to identify and address deficiencies or concerns, enforcing disciplinary actions as directed by the appropriate supervisor, Senior Administrator, and Human Resources.
- Provide training to instructional staff as needed and oversee coordination of required training sessions conducted by BCI.
- Participate in the development and administration of the MCC’s goals and objectives.
- Must strictly adhere to MCC and BCI security protocols, policies, and procedures at all times.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Keep precise records of office supplies and MCC equipment inventory.
- Participate in BCI graduations and ceremonies.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to stay informed about trends and best practices for effectively serving BCI student inmates.
- Attend required meetings and trainings as assigned by BCI, Vice President, Continuing Education/ Workforce Development, Human Resources, and the College.
