The Purpose

The Coordinator Qualified Assistant (QA) for Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) is a critical leadership role required by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. The QA will support the BLET School Director in the planning, coordination, and delivery of Commission-mandated training. This position ensures the program operates with the highest standards of professionalism, ethics, and instructional quality, contributing to the revitalization of law enforcement training in western North Carolina. The duties include administrative oversight, evaluating and giving feedback to part-time instructors on instructional performance and developing initiatives to ensure instructors remain current in their respective disciplines, college policies, and procedures.

Examples of Duties

The Qualified Assistant of Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET/Instructor) will assist the BLET School Director with the planning and development of strategies for BLET planning, delivery, certifications and renewal. The Qualified Assistant of BLET will provide oversight, management, and support of instructors, faculty, and curricula of the BLET program, The duties of the Qualified Assistant of BLET include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate the schedule and implementation of Basic Law Enforcement Training Program in accordance with the prescribed policies and guidelines of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission.
  • Assist in coordination, contracting, and supervision of all instruction offered under the BLET program to ensure that all modules meet the standards for quality and safety established by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission.
  • Manage expenditures for equipment and instructional materials related to the classroom, physical fitness, and situational activities required for BLET training.
  • Maintain current and up-to-date records to comply with all criminal justice standards.
  • Participate in the development, planning, and implementation of goals and objectives and policies and procedures and in all supportive activities of the College.
  • Monitor courses and instructors and ensure that courses meet high quality, standards, and policy.
  • Moderate between students and faculty to facilitate the resolution of a disagreement.
  • Serve as an arbiter of disciplinary issues within the BLET Program, while collaborating with the BLET School Director and Dean of Public Safety.
  • Maintain up-to-date information on instructional materials and techniques.
  • Attend conferences, workshops, and training classes that promote personal development and professional growth, as well as growth of the College’s law enforcement training programs.
  • Conduct instructor and faculty evaluations and the handling of employee related issues in a timely manner.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred).
  • Must meet minimum standards for BLET Qualified Assistant as prescribed by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission.
  • Current General and/or Specialized Instructor Certification through the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
  • Minimum of 5 years of active law enforcement experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or training role.
  • Knowledge of current student learning outcomes, assessment, and curriculum techniques and methods.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Experience with online learning platforms (e.g., Zoom, Collaborate).
  • Certification in Basic Life Support CPR (or ability to obtain within one year).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Experience in a community college or higher education setting.
  • Familiarity with Instructional System Design (ISD) models.
  • Knowledge of regional and national trends in law enforcement training.
  • Ability to work as a team member.

Additional Information

Physical Demands
The ability to perform all duties associated with the position including, but not limited to lifting, prolonged standing, sitting, bending, stooping, and operating or performing work with associated tools and machines. Must be physically able to perform task levels commensurate with a law enforcement officer.
Most common environment and locations in a traditional classroom and law enforcement training environments. This will include the outdoor and off-site capability to manage and coordinate physical fitness, firearms, and driving instruction settings. May require lifting up to 50 lbs., standing for extended periods, and working evenings/weekends.
