Position Description
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The shared student counselor serves Isothermal Community College (ICC), McDowell Technical Community College
(MTCC), and Western Piedmont Community College (WPCC) by providing personal counseling services to support the
emotional, psychological, and social well-being of students. This position plays a critical role in promoting student
mental health, resilience, and overall success through individualized counseling, crisis intervention, and connection to
community resources. While academic and career support may be provided as needed, the core responsibility is to
address students’ personal and emotional challenges.
This position requires flexible scheduling and regular travel between Isothermal, McDowell, and Western Piedmont
campuses. The Counselor must be able to work independently while aligning efforts with institutional policies and
goals. Attention to detail, effective time management, and discretion are essential to successfully supporting students
in a multi-campus environment.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Provide individual counseling to students experiencing emotional distress, anxiety, depression, trauma, or other
mental health concerns.
2. Support students in navigating personal challenges that may interfere with academic success, including housing
insecurity, food access, and family issues.
3. Deliver individualized case management and connect students with on-campus and community-based
resources, including referrals for mental health counseling, SNAP benefits, housing applications, and other basic
needs.
4. Maintain confidential case notes and uphold ethical standards in counseling practice.
5. Develop and maintain a structured weekly schedule that balances student appointments, case management,
documentation, outreach activities, and participation in college-wide events.
6. Respond to behavioral concerns with appropriate interventions or referrals to campus or community services.
7. Provide counseling support for students on academic alert, probation, or suspension, and assist with the
removal of holds (e.g., PERC).
8. Implement and support early alert systems; monitor at-risk students and collaborate with faculty, staff, and
success coaches to support student progress.
9. Follow up with students demonstrating excessive absences, unsatisfactory academic performance, or
behavioral concerns.
10. Coordinate and facilitate workshops on academic success, communication, self-awareness, time management,
and other student development topics.
11. Participate in wellness initiatives and promote mental health awareness and coping strategies through
workshops and campus events.
12. Guide students in navigating both college-based initiatives and external services that reduce barriers to
educational success.
13. Collaborate with campus and community partners to ensure wraparound support for student well-being.
14. Prepare timely reports on student engagement with wellness platforms and services (e.g., Timely Care,
InsideTrack, Single Stop), distinguishing between state-funded and grant-funded sessions by program.
15. Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned in support of the missions and strategic goals
of ICC, MTCC, and WPCC.
