Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Education, Human Services, or related field from an accredited college required.  Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel required.  The Counselor position requires the ability to perceive relationships, to conceptualize, and to apply concepts across a range of duties. Work is generally done under established guidelines and under the direction of a supervisor, but the position does require independent judgement and thoughtful decision-making, especially in the role of overseeing learning communities and tutoring networks. Attention to detail is critical for maintaining accurate records and providing essential reports.  Confidentiality is a must.   

Preferred Qualifications

 A Master’s degree or willingness to work toward a Master’s degree in Counseling, Education, Human Services, or related field from an accredited college or university is preferred.  2 – 3 years experience with North Carolina Community College is preferred. Experience with Colleague software systems, Disability Services, and Title IX are preferred.  Being bilingual in Spanish and English is a plus.

The Counselor/Title IX Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of counseling students for the College.  Coordinates the individual and group counseling services that support current and prospective community college students in meeting their career development, personal, educational, and academic goals.  Administers and interprets career inventories.  Conducts classroom workshops for personal and career development.  Provides personal counseling as needed.  Refers students as needed to local and state support agencies.  

 

 

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provide academic and career counseling services by assisting new and returning students in setting and achieving academic goals, determining career interests, and matching goals/interest to available program majors. 
  • Administer and interpret career interests, values and personality inventories, as well as computerized software guidance programs to students including, but not limited to, O*NET Interest Inventory, Career Scope, My Next Move, and the Myers Briggs test; providing support for other related functions as needed. 
  • Interview and lift student holds (PERC) related to the Alert, Probation and Suspension academic statuses.
  • Manage the Student Access Program (SOS – Student Outreach Services).
  • Manage ThinkingStorm software and online tutoring services (ACE Online Tutoring Services). 
  • Conduct academic success workshops on topics as communication skills, self-concept, career planning, academic, personal, and study skills.
  • Provide crisis intervention related to student behavior or make referrals as needed.
  • Coordinate disability services per ADA & Section 504 requirements; documentation, accommodations, faculty coordination, and student communication.
  • Conduct pre-admission counseling sessions and assist students in setting realistic and achievable goals. 
  • Serve as back-Up Watermark Administrator.
  • Coordinate retention activities for students in case load through an effective follow-up system; monitor student progress following early alert systems including academic alert, academic probation, and academic suspension and work with students on developing an effective plan for academic success. 
  • Conduct follow-up contact with students with excessive absences or who are performing unsatisfactory in class or exhibiting inappropriate behaviors. 
  • Serve as Title IX Coordinator; assure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations and laws regarding student admissions, counseling, record keeping, ADA services, FERPA.
  • Ensure assessment procedures are inclusive of requirements for students with special needs; proctor assessments on an as-needed basis. 
  • Manage Counseling Center tutors; check-in, tutoring sessions review, monthly timesheets, and monthly sign-in sheet.
  • Prepare ThinkingStorm Tutoring Usage Report – separating “State Funded” tutoring from “Perkins Funded” tutoring based on students’ program making sure all numbers match monthly expensed rate.
  • Assist Student Services staff in meeting goals of division. Duties may include the following:   assisting in vocational education initiatives and student leadership programs; assisting students with general information, requests, and program information.
  • Advise new students as needed.
  • Participate in Student Services activities and events (registration, orientation, graduation, open house, etc.). 
  • Perform other job-related duties and projects as assigned in support of the College’s mission, core values and goals.
