Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a discipline within Arts and Sciences from a regionally accredited institution
  • Minimum of five years of teaching experience, preferably at a community college. 
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in academic leadership or administration (e.g., Division Chair, Program Director, Associate Dean, or similar role).
  • Experience with local and state policies and trends pertaining to transfer in higher education.
  • Broad knowledge of educational pedagogy and new methodologies, strategies, and tools, including technologies and multi-media that support engaged learning and the needs of underprepared students required.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development, program assessment, accreditation standards, and academic policy implementation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success, instructional innovation, and continuous improvement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD or EdD from an accredited institution
  • Experience in the NC Community College System
  • Three years of experience as an academic dean

The Division of Arts and Sciences plays a critical role in supporting first-year student success and transfer pathways. The Dean of Arts and Sciences leads efforts to strengthen enrollment, improve student progression and completion, and expand opportunities for successful transfer to four-year institutions. The Dean provides strategic, innovative, and student-centered leadership for the College’s largest academic division while overseeing division operations including academic programming, personnel, budgeting, planning, compliance, and student success initiatives.

The Dean serves as a forward-thinking academic leader who guides the division through continuous improvement and growth while maintaining strong academic standards. The position works collaboratively across the institution to ensure programs support retention, completion, and transfer readiness while aligning with the College’s mission, accreditation standards, and strategic priorities.

This role serves as a key leadership role in advancing the College’s strategic priorities and strengthening the Arts and Sciences division as a central driver of student success, academic excellence, and institutional growth.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide strategic and visionary leadership for all division programs and services, developing and assessing plans aligned with institutional goals while fostering innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Lead initiatives that expand enrollment, improve retention, increase completion rates, and strengthen transfer outcomes for students within the division.
  • Use data and evidence-based practices to guide decision-making, evaluate program effectiveness, and support initiatives that improve student success and transfer outcomes.
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performing academic culture that supports innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Champion innovation in teaching and learning, encouraging faculty to explore effective instructional strategies, course redesign, and emerging technologies that support student engagement and academic success.
  • Oversee academic quality and compliance including curriculum development, program review, assessment, accreditation requirements, and alignment with transfer standards and institutional goals.
  • Promote academic excellence through the development and evaluation of programs that prepare students for successful transfer and continued academic achievement at four-year institutions.
  • Support continuous improvement in instructional quality through data-informed decision-making and assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Encourage faculty engagement in instructional improvement initiatives and innovative learning strategies.
  • Strengthen transfer pathways by developing and maintaining articulation agreements with universities and other educational partners.
  • Collaborate with university partners to ensure alignment of curriculum and academic standards that support seamless transfer opportunities.
  • Support initiatives that expand dual enrollment, early college, and other transfer-oriented pathways for high school students.
  • Promote student success through collaboration with advising, tutoring, and student support services.
  • Lead initiatives designed to improve student persistence, academic progress, and completion within the division.
  • Address student concerns in a fair and consistent manner while maintaining academic integrity and institutional standards.
  • Participate in recruitment, outreach, and enrollment initiatives that promote access to Arts and Sciences programs.
  • Supervise faculty and staff within the division, coordinating recruitment, orientation, evaluation, and professional development activities.
  • Foster a collaborative and supportive environment that encourages faculty engagement in student success initiatives and instructional innovation.
  • Engage faculty in collaborative planning and shared responsibility for advancing student success, instructional quality, and academic innovation.
  • Establish clear expectations for performance and accountability aligned with institutional priorities.
  • Manage division budgets and resources including financial planning, purchasing, equipment, and facilities.
  • Align course scheduling and resource allocation with enrollment patterns and student needs to ensure efficient program delivery.
  • Support external funding opportunities and partnerships that enhance academic programs and student opportunities.
  • Represent the division through participation in institutional planning, governance processes, and college committees.
  • Serve as a liaison with university partners, advisory groups, and community stakeholders to support transfer education and student opportunity.
  • Participate in outreach and partnership efforts that strengthen the College’s role as a regional educational leader.
  • Interpret and enforce institutional, state, and federal policies related to curriculum, instruction, and academic administration.
  • Ensure accurate documentation, reporting, and compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain professional standards, confidentiality, and active engagement in meetings, professional development, and institutional initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
