Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Two to three years of teaching experience at the community college or university level.
  • Two to three years of  experience working with adults in education or similar environment 
  • Two to three years of experience developing and implementing training programs in educational or business/industry settings.  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in a discipline relevant to the Business Careers and Training Division. 
  • Three years of successful administrative experience in management and leadership.
  • Five years of community college/university teaching and administrative experience.
  • Professional experience working in a field or discipline of the division.
  • Familiarity with workforce and continuing education development.

Position Description

To plan, organize, supervise, and direct the instructional and administrative activities of the program areas of responsibility.  Ensures that the curriculum, workforce development and continuing education programs comply with the College and NCCCS standards, policies, and procedures; to review performance data and recommend corrective actions to improve low performing programs.  Responsibility includes course scheduling, selection of supplies and equipment, student recruitment and retention efforts, mentorship of new personnel, evaluation of personnel, leadership in program reviews and development, outreach efforts and coordination with program deans. Provides highly responsible staff assistance to the Executive Vice President/Chief Academic Officer. The Dean of Business Careers & Training performs the following functions:

Essential Duties: 

Program Management

  • Participates in developing, planning, and implementing goals and objectives related to the assigned curriculum, workforce development and continuing education programs. 
  • Monitor programs for compliance as mandated by governing agencies and approval/accrediting agencies.
  • Initiates and maintains written agreements between the college and participating agencies.
  • Participates in developing, planning, and implementing goals and objectives related to the assigned curriculum, workforce development and continuing education programs.
  • Ensures that outreach, recruiting, and retaining students are expectancies for instructors in all departments.
  • Coordinates the development of the course schedule for each semester for both curriculum, workforce development and continuing education programs. Maintains current graduation plans and syllabi for all courses under his/her direct supervision. 
  • Is responsible for developing apprenticeships/internships and for organizing, implementing, and administering curriculum, workforce development and continuing education programs. 
  • Promote a focus on professional credentialing by developing and promoting classes that meet recertification criteria in various professional fields
  • Provides leadership for and oversight of the development, management, assessment, and quality improvement of the College’s curriculum, workforce development and continuing education programs and services based on local community and workforce needs for ultimate benefit within the College’s service area.
  • Promotes the connection between education and the economy by 1) closing the skills gap 2) credentialing, and 3) professional development.
  • Ensure programs are in full compliance with the requirements for accreditation, certification, and other standards stipulated by NCCCS.
  • Establish and maintain an effective advisory committee in support of the curriculum, workforce development and continuing education programs. 
  • Coordinates and collaborates with instructors regarding textbook decisions.
  • Ensures accuracy of course catalog and program information and oversee revisions.
  • Prioritizes equipment and software needs where applicable. 
  • Approves all purchases for Business Careers & Training along with Technical Training which include P-Card and E-Procurement purchases.
  • Facilitates development of new courses in conjunction with the Executive Vice President and program instructors.
  • Works with the Executive Vice President and general administration of the college to suggest, review, and assist with proposals for any new or modified programs in Business Careers and Training. 
  • Guides instructors in the development, assessment, implementation, revision, and systematic, comprehensive program evaluation plan indicated by program/community need, instructors’ committee action, trends in Business Careers programming and training, and recommendations made by state boards and other accrediting agencies. 
  • Leads development and implementation of departmental assessment/program unit strategic plans.
  • Analyzes enrollment data to determine outreach and/or promotional needs.
  • Coordinates the distance education offerings in the curriculum program(s) and or instructional area(s) with Learning Technology Systems Manager and Dean of Student Learning and Innovation. 
  • Explores innovative scheduling options, recommends instructor assignments, and reviews schedules for accuracy.
  • Plan and organize workshops and trainings related to learning strategies to communicate subject matter for maximization of student learning and participate in professional development related to pedagogy and andragogy best practices. 
  • Participate in professional development activities to support and enhance the division. 
  • Stay current with changes in the field and stay current with state and national certifications requirements.  
  • Ensure that all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards are met and comply with the General Duty Clause of the OSH Act to ensure that programs operate in a safe and healthful environment. 
  • Ensure that all of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards are met and will stay current with the standards in the field. 

Personnel Management

  • Oversee the recruitment, selection, and orientation of part-time instructors in assigned areas.
  • Ensure division and departmental deadlines and curriculum requirements are met.
  • Ensures new full-time instructors and staff are assigned and participate in the college’s mentorship program. 
  • Arrange attendance of instructors at recruiting, fundraising and over events on behalf of SCC.
  • Conducts peer observations and recommends professional development opportunities for both full and part-time faculty.
  • Conducts annual performance evaluation for personnel as directed by the Executive Vice President.
  • Submits instructor qualifications applications for approval.
  • Ensure contracts for full-time and part-time instructors are approved prior to first day of class.
  • Manage any conflict within division or College; striving to find an amicable resolution. 

Budget Management 
• Manages departmental budgets as determined by the Executive Vice President/Chief Academic Officer by regularly monitoring the status of expenditures and implementing inventory control methods. 
• Recommends departmental needs for personnel, equipment, supplies, facilities, professional development needs for faculty and staff and other resources during the annual planning process. 
• Maintains labs where applicable related to equipment and supplies, lab records preventative maintenance and purchase of supplies and parts and supervises lab technicians or other support personnel.  

Services to Students 
• Oversee the advising of students in the areas of academic planning and learning support. 
• Serve as a source for academic counseling if needed.  
• Maintains regular, appropriate, professional communication with students. 
• Responds to student concerns and grievances and serves in the student appeal process when needed.  
• Assists in the recruitment and retention efforts of the College. 
• Advocates and provides motivation for students.  

  Other Duties Specific to the Position

  • Remains current in regulations, requirements, and instructional methods through professional development activities offered by the College and other opportunities relevant to the mission and goals of Business Careers Programs as approved.
  • Works with the Executive Vice President/Chief Academic Officer to ensure compliance with external regulatory agencies.
  • Acts as communication liaison between the Executive Vice President and instructors/staff.
  • Participates in discipline, departmental, divisional, and institutional meetings and other co-curricular activities of the College.
  • Enhance communication with area high schools and business and industry partners.
  • Build community and business relations.  Maintains regular, professional communications within the college and affiliated business and industry contacts.  Is actively involved in community events and visible in the community.
  • Coordinates career-oriented activities with program instructors and Student Services.
  • Attend scheduled meetings and coordinates meetings for program instructors/staff.
  • Serves on and actively contributes to college committees as assigned.
  • Provides administrative support for grant programs and proposals for new grants.
  • Gather data and prepare reports for state, regional, national, and federal agencies as required.
  • Conducts special projects and performs other duties as assigned.
  • Willing to travel and participate in events during the day, evening and on the weekends.
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Executive Vice President/Chief Academic Officer.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of management and administrative principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of community college organizational structure including the integration of academic, continuing education, and student services programs.
  • Knowledge of instructors’ credentialing and college accreditation processes.
  • Knowledge of instructional standards and curriculum and/or program requirements as required by state boards and industry credentialing organizations. 
  • Knowledge of instructional standards and curriculum requirements.
  • Knowledge of theories and practices and instructional curriculum design.
  • Knowledge of pedagogy and andragogy practices.
  • Knowledge of continuing education and workforce development standards, guidelines, and requirements. 
  • Strategic planning, leadership, and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with community organizations, businesses, college staff, and the public.
  • Ability to write successful grant narratives and provide data needed for grant proposals.
  • Gain cooperation through discussion and consensus-building processes.
  • Effectively direct the provision of instruction and training for the College.
  • Ability to provide leadership in anticipating and responding to change.
