Position Description
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION: The Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning will be responsible for enhancing educational practices and outcomes that advance student access and success through innovative approaches in instructional technology, distance education, and faculty professional development. This strategic role involves leadership in program development, fostering collaborations, instructional technology oversight, accreditation and compliance support, and implementing best practices that promote equitable, high-quality teaching and learning in a student-centered educational environment, while providing leadership and supervision for instructional support personnel and related functions.
REQUIREMENTS:
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in education, instructional technology, educational leadership, or a related field from a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
- An equivalent combination of education, certifications, professional training, and directly related experience demonstrating the competencies required for this position may be considered in lieu of formal degree requirements.
- Experience administering the Canvas Learning Management System, supporting course delivery, online learning technologies, faculty professional development, and instructional design principles.
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible leadership experience in higher education, including direct supervision of faculty and/or staff in teaching, learning, or instructional support roles.
- Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG, ADA, Section 508), federal and accreditation
requirements, and emerging instructional technologies.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
Preferred:
- Master’s or Doctoral degree in a related field from a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
- Experience leading institution-wide instructional initiatives (e.g., LMS transitions, online learning quality frameworks, accessibility compliance, or faculty development programs).
- Background in a community college setting.
- Knowledge and application of AI-enabled instructional tools to support teaching and learning.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership and Management: Oversees the operations and strategic direction of the CETL.
- Oversees the operations and strategic direction of the Center for Excellence in Teaching
and Learning.
- Ensures compliance with college, state, and federal codes, guidelines, and polices,
including accreditation standards (currently Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
Commission on Colleges), copyright and intellectual property rights, and section 508
Compliance.
- Creates/maintains physical and online presence for the Center for Excellence in Teaching
and Learning, ensuring that professional development sessions and instructional resources
for faculty align with RCC strategic goals and are available throughout the year.
- Develops and implements procedures, in compliance with relevant Board-approved
policies, to support faculty and student needs in distance education.
- Develops and administers the annual CETL budget including budgeting for all Distance
Education needs.
- Fosters a culture of continuous improvement and excellence in teaching and learning.
- Prepares and manages contract cover sheets and requisitions for instructional software,
digital learning tools, and related professional memberships.
Distance Education: Facilitates the design and delivery of online and hybrid courses, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and quality standards.
- Provides leadership for instructional technology services supporting curriculum,
workforce, and continuing education programs.
- Collaborates with faculty, information technology services, and CETL staff to integrate
innovative pedagogical approaches and technologies in traditional and online learning
environments.
- Facilitates the design and delivery of online and hybrid courses aligned with institutional
goals and quality standards.
- Provides information concerning Distance Education programs, instructional technologies,
and services to current and potential faculty, students, and staff.
- Oversees effective use, maintenance, and advancement of the Learning Management System
and related instructional technologies.
- Maintains and updates documents that outline and include Distance Education policies and
procedures at the local (college), state (system office), and federal (SACSCOC, etc.)
levels.
- Supports accessibility management and instructional technologies across modalities.
- Assists with course cloning, master course shells, and course template implementation
during peak enrollment periods.
- Serves as a resource for the Online Learning Quality Committee.
- Attends regional and statewide meetings/conferences.
Professional Development: Provides comprehensive training to faculty and staff.
- Designs and delivers professional development focused on pedagogy, instructional design,
technology integration, assessment, accessibility, and teaching practices that enhance
student engagement and learning.
Knowledgeable about, and interactive with, the VLC in order to promote relevant
opportunities for faculty.
- Schedules and facilitates workshops, seminars, and training sessions on best practices in
pedagogy, instructional resources, and Distance Education.
- Supports faculty in curriculum development, assessment strategies, and the
integration of effective teaching practices.
- Supports faculty onboarding and ongoing instructional training.
Supervision and Collaboration: Provides high quality and thorough support to faculty, staff, and students.
- Partners with academic departments to identify faculty needs and goals related to
teaching and learning.
- Supervises, mentors, and evaluates CETL staff.
- Assigns work, sets priorities, and ensures high-quality, responsive support.
- Coordinates with Information Technology Services, Student Services, Institutional
Effectiveness, and other units to enhance the teaching and learning environment for faculty
and students.
- Serves on college committees and task forces as assigned.
Planning, Research, and Evaluation: Lends expertise as the primary resource for the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
- Develops and implements evaluation methods to assess CETL initiatives and instructional
technology effectiveness.
- Uses faculty and student feedback to inform planning and improvement.
- Participates in departmental and institutional planning and evaluation upon request.
- Conducts research on emerging instructional tools and best practices.
- Attends position-specific regional and statewide meetings/conferences and appropriate
local meetings (college-level).
- Reports regularly to leadership on CETL activities, outcomes, and impact.
