Expected Work Hours

A minimum of a 40-hour work week, as determined with the supervisor, to allow the employee to fulfill the assigned duties and responsibilities, including occasional evening and weekend hours. Summer schedules may vary to enable four-day or four-and-one-half-day work weeks.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a Human Services discipline such as counseling, psychology, social work, or marriage and family therapy from a regionally accredited college/university.

Work Experience:

  • 2 years of practical experience working with a human services-related provider, such as behavioral health, social services, or substance abuse treatment.
  • 1 year of teaching/training experience and familiarity with instruction through Learning Management Systems (LMS). 

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in the Human Services discipline or Social Work. 
  • A current substance abuse certification, such as Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) or certified as a NC Peer Support Specialist (NCCPSS) is preferred.

Position Description

Do Great Things! Durham Technical Community College is hiring a Director/Instructor for Social & Human Services in the Human Services & Public Safety Department. The Director/Instructor is responsible for course preparation, delivery, grading, and records management. The instructor will work closely with their supervisor on matters related to and for the benefit of the courses and their students under their supervision.

Examples of Duties

 

  • Schedule, teach, and prepare for all assigned courses, ensuring adherence to course objectives, and maintain syllabi and instructional plans. Behavioral health programs offered by the Social & Human Services pathway at Durham Tech include but are not limited to;
    1. Mental Health Technician 
    2. Peer Support Specialist
    3. Substance Use Treatment
  • Assist with student advising/registration and maintain complete course and student records, including reports and forms.
  • Enforce academic policies, comply with institutional rules, and participate in curriculum development and monitoring.
  • Recommend and update curriculum, course materials, textbooks, and equipment, and share insights with other faculty members.
  • Keep current with industry trends and local employer needs, ensuring course content remains relevant and up to date.
  • Incorporate community resources, field trips, and guest speakers to enhance course objectives and student engagement.
  • Recruit, assign, and supervise part-time faculty, providing professional development and teaching “train the trainer” courses, expanding teaching capacity as needed.
  • Collaborate with community and state organizations on data collection that will grow the human services programs and student career opportunities.
  • Develop and coordinate volunteer opportunities, internship placements, and work-based learning opportunities for program students.
  • Build and expand partnerships with the local community, faith, healthcare organizations, and social services for training and career development.
  • Participate in local and statewide committees, advocate for program development, and work to integrate Durham Tech into the community resources in both Durham and Orange Counties.
  • Assume other appropriate responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned by the Dean or Chief Academic Officer in meeting the needs of the institution.
