Minimum Qualifications

  • Active, unencumbered license (or multistate licensure privilege) to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina.
  • Graduate degree in nursing from an accredited institution.
  • Two years of full-time faculty experience in a Board-approved nursing program.
  • Experience in clinical nursing and demonstrated leadership ability in academic or nursing administration.
  • Prior to or within three years of employment, completion of education in teaching and learning principles for adult education, including curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation, demonstrated by one of the following:
      1. 45 contact hours of Board-approved continuing education;
      2. Certificate in nursing education;
      3. Nine semester hours of graduate coursework in adult education;
      4. National certification in nursing education; or
      5. Board-approved individualized professional development portfolio.

     

  • Maintain continuing competence pursuant to 21 NCAC 36.0232.

Position Description

Job Description – Summary
The Director of Nursing provides visionary leadership and administrative oversight for all nursing education programs at Surry Community College. This role ensures compliance with the North Carolina Board of Nursing (NCBON), accreditation standards, and institutional policies. The Director is responsible for the overall organization, administration, continuous review, planning, development, and evaluation of the nursing programs. The position requires collaboration with faculty, staff, clinical partners, and community stakeholders to promote excellence in nursing education and student success.

***This is a 12-month position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership and Administration
    • Provide strategic direction and oversight for the Associate Degree and related nursing programs in alignment with college mission and NCBON standards.
    • Ensure compliance with 21 NCAC 36.0317, maintaining authority and responsibility for all areas of the nursing program.
    • Develop, implement, and evaluate program goals, policies, and procedures consistent with institutional and state requirements.
    • Maintain a comprehensive written program evaluation plan to include student achievement, program outcomes, resources, and continuous quality improvement.
    • Prepare annual and long-range plans, budgets, and program review reports.
    • Oversee accreditation and regulatory reporting, ensuring timely submission of all required documentation to NCBON and other agencies.

 

 
Faculty Oversight and Development
  • Recruit, recommend, and evaluate full-time and part-time nursing faculty; ensure all faculty meet Board qualifications.
  • Provide orientation, mentorship, and ongoing professional development to nursing faculty.
  • Conduct annual faculty performance evaluations and assist faculty in professional growth plans.
  • Promote a collegial, collaborative environment that values innovation.
 
Curriculum and Instruction
  • Coordinate curriculum development, review, and revision consistent with state and accreditation standards.
  • Prepare class and clinical schedules in collaboration with faculty.
  • Maintain up-to-date course outlines, textbooks, software, and educational resources.
  • Coordinate clinical placements and ensure adequate clinical learning experiences.
  • Ensure clinical clearance for nursing students and faculty.
  • Teach a reduced instructional load
 
Student Success and Support
  • Oversee student recruitment, advising, orientation, and progression activities.
  • Monitor student success data including retention, graduation, and first-time NCLEX pass rates, implementing improvement plans as needed.
  • Serve as the advisor for admitted nursing students.
 
Partnerships and Community Relations
  • Maintain effective relationships with clinical agencies, healthcare organizations, and other community partners.
  • Participate in regional/state nursing director meetings and professional organizations.
  • Collaborate with local schools, workforce partners, and internal divisions to support recruitment and career pathways.
Teaching Responsibilities

a. Conduct in a professional manner all class hours as assigned by the course schedule and academic calendar.
b. Create correct, professional syllabi that meet Faculty Syllabus Checklist requirements.
c. Create, administer, and accurately assess substantive assignments and activities that require critical thinking.
d. Meet classes on time and for the full duration of the published class time.
e. Post office hours each semester, provide copies for VP, and meet all posted office hours.
f. Attend all mandatory divisional and college-wide meetings and graduation ceremonies.
g. Notify the VP and Instructional Assistant as soon as possible in the event of illness.
h. Maintain alternative educational activities which may be used in the event of faculty illness.
i. Support and follow college policies and procedures.
j. Assume reasonable responsibility for security, maintenance, and inventory of assigned equipment and supplies.
k. Prepare and submit accurate and precise attendance rosters, student grades, book orders, leave reports, and other assigned documents when due.
l. Prepare supplemental teaching activities, such as developing supplemental Moodle course sites, referring weak students for tutoring, consulting with students, and facilitating help or review sessions outside of class time.
m. The teaching load for Director of Nursing is 6-9 contact hours fall and spring semesters, and 3-6 summer semesters.

Evaluation and Accountability

Performance will be evaluated annually based on achievement of program goals, compliance with state and accreditation standards, faculty and student outcomes, and contributions to institutional mission and student success.
