Education Minimum
Master of Science Degree in Nursing with a focus in Nursing Education or Doctorate of Philosophy in Nursing or PhD in Nursing Candidate and meet the education requirements for Nurse Educators as outlined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing within the first three years of employment, which includes:  have preparation in teaching and learning principles for adult education, including curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation, appropriate to assignment.   
 
This preparation may be met by one of the following:
(1)completion of 45 contact hours of continuing education courses;
(2)completion of a certificate program in nursing education;
(3)nine semester hours of graduate course work;
(4)national certification in nursing education; or
(5)documentation of successful completion of structured, individualized development activities of at least 45 contact hours approved by the NC Board of Nursing.  

Experience Minimum:  Two (2) calendar years, or the equivalent of, full time clinical practice experience as a registered nurse.

Position Description

Summary 
Under the supervision of the Dean of Nursing Education Programs, the Simulation Specialist/Nursing Instructor serves the faculty, staff, and students in the daily operations of the simulation center, to include general reception and other duties. The FT Lab Personnel/ Simulation Specialist/Nursing Instructor functions within the specific modalities of Standardized Patient, Manikin simulation, Clinical Procedural Skills, and/or clinical education. Duties also extend to supporting the faculty in managing, scheduling, coordinating, and end user support of all hardware, software, and learning events associated with learning management systems. This position provides high quality support by displaying self-motivation, sound judgement, accuracy, diplomacy, confidentiality, and discretion.   The FT Lab Personnel/ Simulation Specialist/ Nursing Faculty’s responsibilities are designed to enhance the Nursing Program and Johnston Community College as assigned by the Dean of Nursing Education Programs. 

Knowledge & Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following description of job responsibilities and standards is intended to reflect the major responsibilities and duties of the job, but is not intended to describe other duties or responsibilities as may be assigned. 

  • Collaborate with other FT Faculty to conduct clinical simulation training and education in support of the curriculum.
  • Prepare and maintain clinical simulation equipment, media, computers, and materials related to simulation learning in all modalities of responsibility.
  • Provide technical support to the faculty.
  • Assist students and faculty with simulation work and assist faculty in preparations for training experiences (i.e., set up and break down task trainers, manikins, computers, and prepare rooms for events, etc.). Assist with the training of faculty in the use of clinical simulation equipment and serves as a resource for faculty utilizing simulation equipment. Keeps meticulous records of faculty training. 
  • Programs software to model clinical simulator’s physiological responses to instructor specifications.
  • Support/assist in the role-playing applications, prop placement, and general operations of simulation scenarios.
  • Prepares, operates, maintains, and troubleshoots simulation equipment, including high and low fidelity manikins, task trainers, audiovisual systems, and simulation management software. Operate simulation manikin sessions based on scheduled training.
  • Safeguards electronic data and programming by protecting simulation technology from data loss.
  • Conduct tours and clinical simulation sessions for internal/external groups and/or individuals. These tours should be engaging and informative, showcasing the Simulation centers advanced technologies and simulation environments to all visitors.
  • Establish and maintain inventory of supplies and equipment as needed for clinical simulation. Maintains meticulous records of inventory and provides Dean with updates of needed supplies at least 3 months prior to the start of the semester.
  • Collaborates in the maintenance and repair of clinical simulation equipment.
  • Collaborates with IT and vendor contacts to quickly resolve technical issues. Keeps documentation regarding the collaboration and resolution of the issues.
  • Operate and maintain audiovisual equipment used in clinical simulation.
  • Evaluates student learning and provides timely, constructive feedback (within one (1) week) of student’s clinical simulation.
  • Assist in lab setup for all labs and act as a team member, when needed, for NUR 101, NUR 111, and NUR 213.
  • Primary responsibility for open lab for all courses. Develop and post a schedule that meets the needs of each course offered. No more than 1:15 ratio allowed in the lab at one time.
  • Maintain meticulous records of all simulations used for lab and clinical after they have been developed utilizing the Nursing Simulation Design Template.  Upload with the appropriate course for use in future semesters.
  • Lead Debriefing for Meaningful Learning of simulations. Utilizes the Debriefing for Meaningful Learning Student Worksheet. Include course faculty for additional feedback, if needed. Uploads the completed forms in the OneDrive for accreditation purposes.
  • Participate in program evaluation and development and implementation of departmental policies and the annual department plan.
  • Participate in recruitment and selection of students.
  • Attend Faculty and Nursing Advisory Committee meetings.
  • Provide quality care for patients involved in selected learning experiences within the guidelines of the North Carolina Nursing Practice Act.
  • Lead a clinical group at an acute care facility as needed.
  • Comply with all requirements of the health service agencies.
  • Participates in Department and College graduation ceremonies.
  • Participates in affairs of the College including recruitment of students, maintenance of learning environment, student activities, committee appointments, and other duties assigned by the College Administration.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean of Nursing Education Programs.
  • Maintains Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator Certification (CHSE) as dictated by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSIH).

The faculty member MUST hold at minimum a Master of Science Degree in Nursing and have had a minimum of one academic year of full-time teaching experience in a nursing program.

Continuation of employment is contingent upon verification of current North Carolina Registered Nurse License on file with the Program Director of Nursing Education.
