Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree from an accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Experience in success coaching, counseling, or other fields working directly with student populations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, search engines, and web research.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and collect/compile pertinent data.
  • Ability to work with individuals of all socio-economic, cultural, and diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Experience at a community college.
  • Experience in success coaching, counseling, or other fields within a community college working directly with student populations.
  • Knowledge/experience of student success/retention strategies.

Position Description

The Success Coach is responsible for onboarding and supporting students as they begin their educational journey. They will meet with prospective and new students to discuss program options, answer questions about the college, and help them select the right program pathway towards completion of a college credential.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist undecided students with career inventories to help determine goals for future success.
  • Orient new students to the college through the communication of college resources to ensure effective utilization.
  • Ensure student access to college-issued accounts (i.e., email, Self-Service, Watermark, Moodle, etc.)
  • Connect new and returning students to their designated faculty advisors/deans on a regular basis for proper transition. 
  • Work to identify and resolve student barriers and obtain support to meet specific needs.  
  • Assist students and faculty in problem-solving issues related to progress towards academic goals, persistence, and participation.
  • Monitor student academic progress using case management and retention software to provide student follow-up
  • Intervene with students who are at-risk of academic review, warning, and/or probation.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all requirements, courses, and programs at HCC.
  • Work with the registrar’s office to regularly conduct outreach for prospective students who applied but never attended the College, and students who ceased attending the College.
  • Provide assistance to students who have fallen below the success metrics.
  • Work with employers, online networks, and students to provide career services supports for students.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assist in recruitment efforts as needed.
  • Participate in new student orientation and campus tours as needed to establish rapport with new students.  Some evening and weekend events may be required.
  • Participate in appropriate professional development workshops, seminars, and conferences.
  • Meet with academic deans on an annual basis to discuss programmatic changes.
  • Maintain well-working relationships with Financial Aid, Business Operations, Learning Support Services, etc.
  • Be knowledgeable of the area’s four-year university baccalaureate degree programs that align with HCC programs for transfer students as covered under the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) and the Independent Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (ICAA)
  • Be knowledgeable of college policies and procedures regarding admission standards, testing, and educational program requirements.
  • Encourage and support students’ participation in college activities leading to first-year progression and increased retention.
  • Work closely with the high school programs coordinator and faculty advisors to maintain a high level of communication and collaboration.
  • Coordinate events, webinars, and training for the students in areas of need. Develop and present lessons, workshops, etc., to assist students with skills and knowledge to navigate college processes. 
  • Explore the HCC website with students.
  • Contribute to the attainment of college, division, and department goals.
  • Work to ensure the best possible experience for students.
  • Participate in college committees.
  • Assist in the advancement of the NCCCS Performance Measures.
  • May drive college-owned vehicles.
  • Other duties as assigned.
