Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of experience working directly with adults diagnosed with developmental/ intellectual disabilities.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the unique nature and role of education and skill development for adults diagnosed with developmental disabilities.
  • Ability to work with students who may be dually diagnosed with mental health concerns, physical and medical issues, as well as developmental disabilities.
  • General Statute 122C-80 a Criminal History Background with consent is required as well as fingerprint check if the applicant has been a resident of NC for less than 5 years.
  • A valid North Carolina driver’s license and insurable to drive state vehicles as needed.
  • Must 18 years of age or older.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be physically able to lift, carry, push, pull or other wise move objects, including the human body.
  • Must be physically able to push or pull a wheelchair to move individuals if necessary.

 

 OTHER RELEVANT KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Experience with MS Outlook, MS Word
  • NC Council on Developmental Disabilities People First Philosophy
  • Person Centered Goal Setting and CLFS Program Standards
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office, Office 365, and Internet

 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in special education or human services
  • CPI, CPR/First Aide Certification

 

Position Description

 

GENERAL FUNCTION:

The ILS Instructor is responsible to provide organized developmental activities for adults with Intellectual Developmental Disabilities not enrolled in ABE.  The classroom activities organized by the ILS instructor will prepare the individual to live and work as independently as possible.  The ILS Instructor adheres to the principles of normalization and community integration aimed at increasing age-appropriate actions, images and appearance of the individual.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Essential duties include daily instruction, evaluation and training with individuals, maintenance of life skills currently accomplished by the participant, work with the full circle of support (examples: families, guardians, day support staff, program director, assistant director supported employment staff) to aid in the participant’s success. The ILS Instructor will also provide an engaging, safe, and comfortable environment for meaningful learning to occur.
  • Assist participants in the development of basic social skills (personal space, esteem building activities, non-verbal communication), safety, assist clients with daily living, personal hygiene, encourage making healthy choices, and activities to encourage self-reliance as the individual’s abilities allow.
  • Assist individuals in participating in adequate and safe transportation.
  • To record monthly quarterly progress reports
  • Ability to use independent judgment in regularly non-routine and or unstable situations
  • Behavior should be professional at all times and consistent with the Brunswick Community College mission, values, philosophy, policies and procedures
