Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma and at least 5 years of professionally documented experience working in a custodial and/or environmental services position in a commercial setting.
  • Must possess the physical ability and knowledge to operate all commercial, custodial, and residential cleaning equipment.
  • Must possess the physical ability and knowledge to properly utilize all commercial, custodial, and residential cleaning chemicals.
  • Must possess the ability and knowledge to instruct others on commercial and residential cleaning.

Martin Community College is the hiring employer. Instruction will be provided in Bertie Correctional Institution. Initial offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of all pre-employment screening requirements for both Martin Community College and Bertie Correctional Institution. All employees contracted and assigned work in Bertie Correctional Institution must maintain their eligibility privileges throughout their contract to continue their work at the prison. Failure to maintain eligibility to work in Bertie Correctional Institution may result in termination of employment with Martin Community College.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree in environmental services or an associate degree with major coursework in environmental services from a regionally accredited institution.

Position Description

Position Summary

Will provide instruction on the general techniques and skills required for entry level environmental services and/or custodial staff positions employed in commercial and/or residential settings. Core instructional topics include cleaning/detailing of commercial and residential properties, bathrooms, common areas, and floor care; dispensing of cleaning chemicals and blood-borne pathogen awareness; and understanding various OSHA rules and regulations.

This position will be stationed at the Bertie Correctional Institution (BCI) in Windsor, NC. Applicants must be comfortable working inside a prison setting and pass all pre-employment screenings. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide general instruction for students on topics related to proper cleaning processes and techniques in commercial and residential settings. Topics to include but are not limited to proper cleaning techniques of interior commercial and residential properties; basic bathroom cleaning; ground rules for custodians; safety for custodians; daily floor maintenance; proper maintenance of janitorial equipment, supplies, and tools; sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and stripping and finishing floors; basic carpet cleaning methods.
  • Provide instruction and demonstration on how to properly operate all commercial, custodial, and residential cleaning equipment and tools.
  • Provide instruction and demonstration on how to properly utilize and store all commercial, custodial, and residential cleaning chemicals and supplies.
  • Observe student work and address deficiencies associated with a particular learning topic.
  • Determine training needs of students regarding various cleaning topics.
  • Administer oral, written, and/or performance tests to measure progress and evaluate training effectiveness.
  • Develop and prepare classwork, assignments, and tests to evaluate student performance. 
  • Grade and record individual student scores.
  • Develop curriculum and plan course content and methods of instruction. Seek guidance on curriculum and course content expectations and requirements from the supervisor as needed.
  • Provide instruction in a prison environment.
  • Organize and maintain a clean and efficient classroom and laboratory setting; model and instruct students on the importance of a clean, organized, and hazard free work environment.
  • Maintain classroom safety.
  • Maintain student confidentiality.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, deficiencies, learning outcomes, grades, performance, discipline, and other records required by Continuing Education and BCI.
  • Report workplace safety concerns to the appropriate BCI personnel and the supervisor.
  • Report instructional needs to the supervisor or delegate.
  • Communicate concerns and direct questions pertaining to employment to the supervisor or delegate.
  • Maintain professionalism in the classroom and within the BCI facility at all times.
  • Adhere to all Martin Community College and BCI policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
