The considered normal working hours for this position will work 8:30 a.m.– 5:30 p.m., Monday–Friday at 40 hours per week, which includes a 1-hour lunch break. The teaching aspect of this job could vary from day hours and/or evening and/or weekend hours. This position may be asked to work during special events and the hours for any particular day are subject to change. Weekend and evening duty may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent, Associate’s degree or higher preferred. 
  • Must be licensed with the NC Board of Barber and Electrolysis Examiners. This must include a current license to practice barbering and a license to teach barbering.

  • At least five (5) years of experience as a licensed barber.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of teaching or training experience in barbering or a related instructional setting.

Position Description

Do Great Things! Durham Technical Community College is hiring an Instructor/Coordinator in the Barbering Program. The Barbering Instructor/Coordinator will be responsible for providing instructional leadership, operational management, and curriculum oversight for the college’s barbering program. This position includes classroom and lab teaching, management of program scheduling, supply inventory, compliance with state licensure requirements, and supervision of part-time faculty and clinic operations. The Instructor Coordinator ensures that Durham Tech students are well-prepared for licensure and employment in the barbering industry, upholding the college’s standards of excellence, equity, and workforce alignment. The teaching delivery method may be online and/or in person.

Examples of Duties

  1. To inform the Dean, Assistant Dean, and Lead Director of program activities and maintain close working relationships with all other appropriate partners, local industry, and agencies.  
  1. Coordinate all day-to-day operations of the Barbering Program, including classroom instruction, clinic management, and instructional support staffing.
  2. Develop semester schedules in collaboration with the Dean to ensure adequate faculty coverage and program compliance.
  3. Maintain the cleanliness, professionalism, and safety of instructional and clinical environments, ensuring alignment with college and regulatory policies.
  1. To manage classroom attendance, entering grades, administering tests, and interpersonal communication with students, customers, faculty, and staff.
  2. To maintain inventory for Barbering supplies and equipment. 
  1. To attend faculty/staff meetings and complete mandatory employee trainings.
  2. To coordinate, execute, and attend career/job/college fairs to assist in recruiting for Business and Entrepreneurship and Information Technology.   
  3. To place E-procurement and purchase orders for the Barbering program. 
  4.  Ensure the Barbering program meets all regulatory and licensure standards set by the North Carolina State Board of Barber Examiners and Durham Tech.
  5. Maintain documentation for student clock hours, program hours, course syllabi, and annual program reviews.
  6. Assist in the preparation of reports, audits, and evaluations for internal and external stakeholders.
  7. Participate in program audits and continuous improvement processes.
  8. To help build positive relationships within the team and with external stakeholders.
  9. To oversee the updates for instructors’ handbooks, course materials, and students’ handbooks.
  10. Serve as a liaison to local barbering businesses, salons, and professional associations to develop externship opportunities and promote graduate employment.
  11. Coordinate guest speakers, workshops, and demonstrations to enrich the student learning experience and connect with industry trends.
  12. Participate in professional development activities to maintain licensure and remain current in teaching methodologies and barbering practices.
  13. To assist with program administrative duties and other related duties as requested by the Dean, Assistant Dean, and Lead Directors
