Minimum Qualifications

Required:

  • Associate’s degree in EMS/Sciences or a related field to instruct an Emergency Medical Services program, from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Currently certified in the United States to practice out-of-hospital care.
  • Two years of teaching experience at or above the level of the EMS program.
  • Two calendar years of prior full-time employment or equivalent in clinical field practice in EMS field.
  • Prior EMS experience in assigned area of teaching responsibility with field experience in the delivery of out-of-hospital emergency care.

  Licensure and other Special Requirements (minimum required):

  • Valid North Carolina EMS (NCEMS) Credential.
  • Hold a current Level 1 Instructor certification or the ability to obtain Level 1 Instructor certification within 6 months.
  • Hold instructor certifications in BLS or the ability to obtain within 6 months.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in EMS/Sciences or a related field to instruct in an EMS program; from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Credentialed as NC EMT-Paramedic. 
  • Experience in EMS accreditation such as Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)/Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for Emergency Medical Services Professionals (CoAEMSP).
  • Experience with instructional technology.
  • Experience in distance education.
  • Experience in marketing educational programs.
  • Basic knowledge of the American Heart Association.
  • Hold instructor certifications in ACLS and PALS

9 Month Faculty position

The role of the full-time Instructor, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is to provide knowledge in his/her field of expertise and to promote various student-centered learning activities that will stimulate an interest in critical thinking and a desire for life-long learning. Various teaching strategies, learning styles and delivery methods including new technology systems will be utilized to reach this goal. The position assists with the planning, coordination and administration of didactic and clinical activities for the program. 

The Instructor, EMS receives supervision from the Instructor/Program Coordinator, Emergency Medical Sciences.  

Examples of Duties:
  General:

  • Maintains competency in theoretical knowledge pertaining to areas of instruction, as well as in current trends in the programs curricula. Correlates clinical education with didactic education.
  • Teaches an appropriate course load. The appropriate workload is determined in consultation with the Program Coordinator.
  • Assists in developing, implementing and evaluating standards/policies for the admission, progression and graduation of students in the program. Assists in the orientation of students in EMS clinical courses.
  • Assists with establishing guidelines for the selection and awarding of the programs scholarship recipients (those scholarships given by organizations and private individuals).
  • Serves as an advisor to students in the program.
  • Develops, implements, evaluates and revises the programs coursework and curriculum.
  • Participates in selection of the textbooks used in the program.
  • Assists in developing and insuring that all course syllabi for the program are current.
  • Participates in the process for the addition/deletion of library books, program-related journal and magazine subscriptions and audiovisual materials in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Assists with quality review and improvement processes for the EMS program including long range planning, ongoing program development and evaluation of the effectiveness of the EMS program.
  • Cooperates with the program coordinator in periodic review and revision of clinical course materials.
  • Assists with tracking of completion or reentry of students for the EMS program.
  • Assists with accurate preparation and submission of various reports for the program.
  • Participates in and provides information for various evaluation processes at the College.
  • Participates in the recruitment of students for the program and the College as appropriate.
  • Assists with the development of promotional materials and works with marketing to get materials published, advertised and distributed.
  • Serves as a channel of communication between the students and the Program Coordinator.
  • Attends regularly held program faculty meetings.
  • Assists and provides input to the Program Coordinator on annual program budget requests and needs for the program including instructional supplies, equipment and travel needed to accomplish the program’s objectives.
  • Maintains security of equipment assigned to the program.
  • Assists in the preparation of requests for special funds to enhance the program.
  • Maintains current knowledge of the discipline and educational methodologies through continuing professional development.
  • Maintains current knowledge of program policies, procedures and student progress.
  • Assists with acquiring and maintaining EMS program accreditation.
  • Participates actively in college and department committees as assigned.
  • Maintains membership in professional organizations as appropriate.
  • Represents the College in the community in a positive manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 Unique:

  • Adheres to the policies/guidelines in the EMS programs handbooks.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state and federal health care and EMS regulations.
  • Attends an annual training session on Bloodborne Pathogens and the EMS Program’s Exposure Control Plan.
  • Maintains contacts with businesses, industry and professional organizations to ensure EMS program is current and includes advances in the field.
  • Supports innovation, distance learning offerings and the use of technology.
  • Prepares and submits reports required.
  • Participates in the selection of EMS students.
  • Maintains and updates student files regarding admission records, health records and other personal data as required by the EMS program.
  • Assists with selection of new clinical learning resources per established criteria and with input from faculty and/or other consultants.
  • Receives input from faculty, students and graduates related to evaluation of clinical learning resources and acts appropriately.
  • Assists with activities of the program with affiliating clinical agencies by attending meetings as requested by the Program Coordinator.
  • Assist with AHA, field, and clinical coordination (clinical liaison) and other related EMS educational activities.
