Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Education/Training:
- An AAS degree in Marine Technology or other closely related field from a regionally accredited college or university.
- Training in the use of hydrographic survey equipment and software.
- Ability to set up and conduct field surveys.
- Experience working on research vessels.
- Knowledge of topographic maps and bathymetric chart basics, including symbols, contours, elevations, coordinate systems, and basic survey instruments, modeling, and field projects.
- Expertise calibrating and using RTK, single beam, multi beam, and side-scan sonar, Z-boat (or similar) hydrographic survey equipment and data analysis software (preferably HYPACK and HYSWEEP hydrographic software or equivalent).
Minimum Experience:
- 1-3 years of experience utilizing hydrographic survey equipment and software.
- Current graduate students with experience using hydrographic field equipment and software. * *

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher or equivalent industry training.
- 3 plus years of experience working as a hydrographic surveyor or geological oceanographer at sea or in large marine or freshwater bodies such as the Chesapeake Bay, Great Lakes or similar.
- 3 plus years planning and conducting field surveys.
- 3 plus years of experience utilizing hydrographic survey equipment and software; HYPACK and HYSWEEP.
- 3 plus years of experience training, mentoring, or managing junior colleagues in job training pertinent to hydrographic survey and similar disciplines and skills within marine technology and geological oceanography.
- Familiarity or established relationships with equipment and software providers such as EdegTech, YSI, etc.
- Intermediate to Advanced experience with Geographic Information Systems software, Arc Map Pro, Arc Map Online, and CAD.
- Intermediate to Advanced experience with coding languages such as Python, Java, R, etc.
- A minimum of 1 year of formal classroom teaching experience in higher education.
- US Coast Guard OUPV license.
Position Description

DEFINITION
To perform a variety of duties involved in teaching and preparing of instructional materials, field trips, and laboratory demonstrations; and to perform various services directly related to classroom instruction of hydrographic survey technologies both equipment and software as well as the maintenance of such equipment within the Marine Technology Program.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives immediate to general supervision from the Marine Technology Program Director and higher-level academic staff.
Exercises no supervision. -
Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTION STATEMENTS–Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Functions:- Teaching course in Hydrographic Survey Technics, Hydrographic Survey Data Analysis, and Instrumentation.
- Perform and teach data analysis in HYPACK and HYSWEEP hydrographic software or equivalent.
- Operating and maintaining hydrographic equipment including single beam, multibeam, side scan sonar, RTK, ROV, and Z-Boat.
- Calibration and repair of hydrographic equipment.
- Hydrographic survey workshop management.
- Knowledge of and experience with basic electrical systems.
- Act as an instructor and/or assist with student research cruises at sea for up to 10 days.
- Continuing professional development and education in the field of hydrographic survey and applying it to course work and field/lab experiential learning.
- Maintain software licenses and connections with hydrographic software and equipment manufacturers as appropriate for equipment maintenance, repair, updates, etc.
- Operate, distribute, and demonstrate proper and safe use of equipment; describe laboratory/workshop maintenance procedures.
- Correct and grade student assignments; provide tutoring where appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Hydrographic survey field procedures, planning, and execution.
- Operational techniques of laboratory equipment and machinery used in training students.
- Knowledge of and experience with basic electrical systems.
- Industry trends and needs pertaining to student job placement in the field of hydrographic survey and marine technology
- Current and emerging technologies in the field of hydrographic survey and marine technology
- Current scientific knowledge and advancements in the field of aquatic hydrography and geological oceanography (as relevant to hydrographic survey).
- Local, regional, or global industry, higher education, and research opportunities for active students and post-graduation students.
- Basic Microsoft office suite programs Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and web publishing software.
Ability to:
- Safely work at sea aboard a research vessel.
- Safely operate small boats.
- Teach marine technology subject matter to students.
- Operate and teach the use of various hydrographic sampling instrumentation and software analysis packages.
- Maintain accurate records.
- Work independently in the absence of supervision.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with department faculty and staff.
- Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
