Minimum Qualifications

 

  • High School Diploma 
  • North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshall (OSFM) certified Fire Fighter II 
  • North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshall (OSFM) certified and qualified in Fire Instructor II or the ability to attain one upon hire.
  • A valid North Carolina Driver’s License and a Class B Driver’s license or the ability to attain one upon hire.

 

Experience Required

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the fire rescue field. 
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the delivery of certification courses. 
  • Qualified NC Firefighter Instructor

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Degree in Fire Protection Technology, Fire Science, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited college/university 
  • Specialty Certifications as a North Carolina: Driver/Operator, Emergency Vehicle Driver, Fire Officer, Hazardous Materials (Haz-Mat) Responder or Technician, Technical Rescue (Vehicle Machinery Rescue (VR), Agricultural Rescue, Water Rescue, Confined Space and Ropes or Wildland Fire Suppression.

 

Experience Preferred

  • Greater than five (5) years of relevant field experience in fire service/ fire protection.
  • Greater than three (3) years of fire service/ fire protection training/teaching experience based on regulatory training standards. 
  • Teaching/training experience at a post-secondary institution.
  • Experience with assessment of student learning outcomes
  • Experience with distance learning and/or alternate instructional delivery systems

Position Description

 

OPEN UNTIL FILLED

 

This Lead Instructor will provide the vision and leadership required to support and enhance the mission of the High School Fire Academy. The Lead Instructor’s primary administrative responsibilities include program development/management, continuous review, planning, effectiveness of the program, providing supervision and mentoring to assistant part-time instructors.
 

The Lead Instructor over the High School Fire Academy reports directly to the Fire Rescue Training Coordinator. This position may require occasional travel between campuses and for training. 
 

Instructional responsibilities require a broad-based knowledge of the Fire Service field of study at the local, state, and national levels. The lead instructor will be responsible for supporting student success by creating an optimum learning environment, responding to student needs, managing effective instructional activities, developing curriculum courses, modeling employability skills, demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative work relationships with other faculty and staff, and maintaining competency in their instructional field. 
 

 

Example of Duties

 

  • Assist in the planning, developing, coordinating, and delivering of Office of the State Fire Marshal certification courses within the Fire Program parameters. 
  • Effectively communicate with students, potential students, staff, and coverage agencies. 
  • Inventory, maintenance, and asset management of Alamance Community College owned fire apparatus and equipment. 
  • Maintain high school fire academy records. 
  • Keeps abreast of advancements and best practices in the fire service. 
  • Assist with research and purchase of equipment, as needed.  
  • Assist with the management of training supplies, ascertain the need for, and request as mandated by the Office of the State Fire Marshal. 
  • Attending meetings and training, as necessary, to stay up to date on pertinent information within the Fire Program at the state level. 
  • Maintain strong emphasis on health and safety throughout training activities. 
  • Maintain safe operation and instruction of the training ground.  
  • Utilize written and oral communications skills when completing job functions. 
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and strong attention to detail.
