Position Description

Job Summary:

The Librarian provides reference and instructional services, promotes library services and collections to campus constituencies, maintains online research tutorials and guides, and serves as liaison with academic departments. In this role, the Librarian collaborates with other library staff and various college departments to meet the institutional mission and objectives. They develop broad, campus-wide coordination of educational opportunities for students and provide innovative leadership and vision within library services, including assessment, development, planning, operations, department review, and continuous improvement. Additionally, the Librarian actively participates in college activities, professional development opportunities, and grant-writing processes while reporting to the Director of Library and Instructional Support Services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership and Planning

The Librarian leads division-wide initiatives and strategic planning efforts by:

Encouraging student learning, inspiring quality teaching, and cultivating meaningful library programs of study.
Representing the department in college planning processes, including prioritizing and making sound decisions based on data.
Ensuring continuity of the college’s mission through library services, library instruction, innovative programs, and learning opportunities.
Evaluating the health and viability of current services and programs as related to community needs.

Personnel Management

The Librarian directs staff development through:

Establishing and sustaining productive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community patrons.
Coordinating library instruction and library programming activities.
Collaborating with faculty and staff on committees and professional development.

Budget and Resource Management

The Librarian manages financial and physical resources by:

Maintaining records within the Integrated Library System (ILS) and other library applications.
Making sound recommendations for equipment and personnel through supporting and monitoring library programs and activities.
Delivering weekly reports and mid-year updates and adjustments as needed.
Coordinating administrative duties, including inventory and maintenance of books, materials, and equipment.

Academic Oversight

The Librarian ensures academic quality and compliance through:

Reviewing library instruction, selection of supplemental materials and books, and appropriate library/classroom environments through implementing the Online Learning Consortium (OLC), Quality Matters (QM), and various teaching and learning frameworks designed to enhance student success.
Verifying administrative duties are completed promptly and accurately.
Overseeing student and library program learning outcomes and assessments.
Collaborating with other division leaders to offer collaborative library instruction and learning opportunities.

Instruction and Student Support

The Librarian supports teaching and learning by:

Teaching library instruction and information literacy classes and/or leading special projects as recommended by the Library Director.
Planning and delivering accessible, high-quality instruction that enhances learning and promotes student success.
Supporting students’ understanding of the importance of transferable skills for achieving success in college, life, and the workplace.
Providing tutoring services assistance as needed in terms of reports and monitoring the tutoring center sessions.

Institutional Effectiveness

The Librarian contributes to college-wide improvement efforts through:

Engaging in institutional effectiveness processes and college-and state-wide initiatives (e.g., program review, grants, Strategic Plan, NC Guided Pathways, SACSCOC accreditation, programmatic accreditation).
Demonstrating proficiency in student learning outcomes assessment, including aligning experiences with outcomes, and analyzing data to enhance learning.
Pursuing professional development activities each academic year, including required training, and staying current in professional literature.
Championing the College’s initiatives for student retention, progression, and completion.

External Relations

The Librarian builds partnerships and community connections by:

Collaborating with other librarians and institutions, the community, and other departments to establish and expand current learning opportunities.
Participating in advisory, standing, and ad hoc committees; developing recommendations related to library instruction, policies, and procedures.
Engaging in recruitment efforts by reviewing and recommending improvements for library program publications, the College website, social media, and marketing materials.
Seeking grant opportunities to aid in library program funding as appropriate.

Specialized Functions

The Librarian has the following responsibilities:

Maintaining familiarity with specific programmatic accreditation agencies (e.g., state library, state auditor, NCCCLA, ALA, SACSCOC).
Fostering and maintaining partnerships with other professionals to create experiential learning opportunities for students.

Education and Experience Requirements

Master’s degree in library science or a related field from an institutionally accredited institution.
At least three (3) years of combined library experience.
At least one (1) year of project management experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

Experience in community college and instruction.
At least one (1) year of experience with integrated library system software.

Physical Requirements

The Librarian must manage the following physical requirements of the job:

Environment

Working in an office or learning environment, typically indoors, with moderate noise levels.

Working closely with others and occasionally working online or on irregular hours.

Maintaining equipment and supplies, ensuring cleanliness, functionality, and compliance with OSHA regulations.

Physical Effort

Maintaining physical condition appropriate to assigned duties, including standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods, moderate lifting and carrying (up to fifteen pounds), general manual dexterity, operating equipment, and extended computer screen exposure.

Mental Requirements

Making sound decisions using good judgment, demonstrating intellectual capabilities, working with numbers, maintaining confidentiality, and evaluating programs, courses, services, and personal effectiveness.

Schedule and Travel

To complete job responsibilities and tasks, the Librarian must adhere to the following:

Schedule:

Present on campus and/or at a Mitchell site location for teaching, learning, or other duties/responsibilities.

Travel:

Local travel between campuses and community locations will be required. Limited out-of-state travel for professional development, training, conferences, and workshops.

Related Responsibilities

The following are the other responsibilities of the Librarian’s role:

Attending the College graduation ceremony and supporting other student and institutional activities.
Assisting with inventory management or library holdings (books and equipment) and assuming responsibility for designated facilities.
Evaluating digital resources yearly and assuming responsibility for creating/maintaining lib guides, lib calc, and lib wizard.
Performing other duties as assigned by the Director of Library and Instructional Support Services and the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Institutional Effectiveness.
