Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree, preferably in Medical Laboratory Science or a related field from a regionally accredited institution
  • Current ASCP-BOC or ASCP generalist certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist
  • Minimum two (2) year’s experience in a clinical laboratory setting
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ teaching experience
  • Solid understanding of NAACLS accreditation requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to develop successful strategies for enrollment growth, student success, and student retention

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching experience at a community college level, teaching college level courses, and evaluating student knowledge of current NAACLS accreditation standards and procedures
  • Familiarity with North Carolina Community College curriculum structure and processes
  • Curriculum/program development experience, policy, and procedure formulation; and evaluating program effectiveness

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • ASCP generalist certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist

 

Position Description

The Department Head provides dynamic and innovative leadership focused on faculty and student success.

 

Example of Duties

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the Medical Laboratory Technology and Histotechnology departments
    • Prepare class schedules
    • Manage Student and faculty questions, complaints, appeals, etc.
    • Manage departmental budgets
      • Order supplies and equipment
      • Approve professional development/travel requests
      • Approve spending for department-related events
    • Oversee maintenance of classrooms and laboratory areas
    • Collect and review paperwork such as census reports, final grade submissions, office hours, leave documents, and Smart Evaluations.
    • Place/Schedule/Monitor of students during clinical rotations
    • Grow and maintain sufficient quality clinical sites for Medical Laboratory Technology and Histotechnology department
  • Supervise full-time and part-time faculty of the Medical Laboratory Technology and Histotechnology Department
    • Hire and orient adjunct faculty and preparing adjunct contracts
    • Identify and assign appropriate teaching responsibilities to full-time and adjunct faculty
    • Evaluate faculty performance
  • Review and use data to make program-related decisions, including, but not limited to:
    • Enrollment data
    • Course withdrawal rates
    • Student success rates
    • Program retention and completion rates
  • Engage in continuous improvement efforts
    • Identify and assess course and program level outcomes
    • Update and maintain course plans, curriculum maps, course syllabi, etc.
    • Complete department reports, such as program reviews, annual program reports, recruitment plans, and retention plans.
    • Monitor and build enrollment
  • Maintain the quality and reputation of the department
    • Build and maintain positive and effective relationships with internal and external partners, including College faculty and staff, business and industry, K-12, and higher education.
    • Plan and conduct Advisory Committee meetings once a year
  • Teach classes in the Medical Laboratory Technology department per the College’s teaching load formula
  • Recruit, retain, and advise students, including participation in open houses, recruitment fairs, and retention initiatives.
  • Participate in student club activities and events
  • Assist with accreditation reports
  • Oversee live projects as relevant
  • Stay current with the requirements of the programs including maintaining good standing with NAACLS accreditation
  • Participate in a minimum of 36 hours of documented continuing professional education every three years
  • Serve on College committees and other duties as assigned

 

 

This position requires strong interpersonal skills in communication with students to include recruiting and advising, as well as participation with colleagues, staff, administrators, and community partners as individuals or as part of a team. Participation in college functions, committee assignments and other tasks as assigned is also required. Work hours may include day, evening, and weekend hours.
