Minimum Qualifications

Current unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of North Carolina (or compact state); A Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited nursing program; Evidence of education in teaching and learning principles for adult education, including curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation*; At least two (2) years of full-time experience teaching in a pre-licensure nursing program and; At least two years (2) of full-time clinical experience. 

*Evidence includes completion of 45 contact hours of North Carolina Board of Nursing (NCBON) approved continuing education courses; completion of a certificate program in nursing education, nine semester hours of graduate course work in adult learning and learning principles; national certification in nursing education; or documentation of successful completion of structured, individualized development activities of at least 45 contact hours approved by the NCBON.

PREFERRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Previous administrative experience leading a pre-licensure nursing program; Experience with NLN CNEA accreditation and NCBON regulations for nursing programs and at least five (5) years of clinical experience.

Demonstrates thorough understanding of and commitment to the mission and philosophy of the North Carolina Community College System and the mission and goals of Pitt Community College, the Health Sciences Division, and Nursing Program. Demonstrates knowledge of trends and best practices in nursing education; principles of adult education and student-centered learning activities; curriculum development, administration, planning, coordination, and delivery; federal, state, and/or local policies, rules, regulations, and standards as they apply to nursing education; accrediting body, regulatory agency, and/or legal requirements as they relate to nursing education; OSHA standards as they apply to health sciences educational environments; modern instructional technology; and leadership styles and group dynamics. Demonstrates proficiency with use of email, word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation software, and Internet.

Position Description

POSITION OPEN UNTIL FILLED

The Pitt Community College Associate Degree Nursing program began offering the Associate Degree in Nursing in 1974. The program is part of the Health Sciences Division. The program graduates nurses to support the nursing workforce in the community and region. The North Carolina Board of Nursing has approved the program for a total enrollment of 300 students.

 

Currently students are admitted annually in the fall semester for this five-semester program.

 

Graduates of this program are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). The 2024 first time NCLEX-RN pass rate was 99%. Employment opportunities are vast within the global health care system and may include positions within acute, chronic, extended, industrial, and community health care facilities. Employment rates of new graduates are consistently 95% or higher within the first 6 months post-graduation.

The Nursing Program Director is a 12-month position and reports to the Dean of Health Sciences. The Director is responsible and accountable for the operational leadership and ensuring the fulfillment of educational goals and objectives, program compliance with regional institutional accreditation standards, and maintaining full approval through the North Carolina Board of Nursing (NCBON) and the National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA). 

Essential Job Functions

Provides strategic leadership and vision for the nursing program, aligning with the college mission and goals.

Ensures compliance with the NCBON and NLN CNEA accreditation requirements to maintain quality and integrity of the nursing program.

Performs systematic review of program effectiveness through data analysis, assessment and continuous improvement initiatives, and responsiveness to changes in healthcare and nursing education.

Leads nursing program design and evaluation including, but not limited to, course completion, program retention, licensing exam pass rates, job placement, and graduation surveys.

Recruits and evaluates full-time and adjunct nursing faculty.

Creates, maintains, and assigns course schedules for all nursing classes to maximize student success, support best practices in teaching, and ensure fiscal stewardship.

Ensures availability of current and consistent course guides and syllabi.

Updates Dean on challenges, issues, and concerns of the nursing program and area health care providers and suggests opportunities for the program to continuously enhance its service in nursing. 

Collaborates with faculty to evaluate and ensure effective, appropriate, and compliant processes and policies related to nursing, including, but not limited to, admissions, testing, attendance and conduct.

Establishes and maintains a positive, effective working relationship with students, staff, faculty, administration, institutional representatives and other stakeholders.

Secures and maintains clinical affiliations with area health care facilities and ensures student compliance with pre-clinical requirements. 

Maintains articulation and affiliation agreements.

Annually reviews and updates Nursing Student Handbook.

Seeks opportunities to market the nursing program to individuals, groups, and industry leaders.

Collaborates with East Carolina University College of Nursing and other participating colleges and universities to support the RIBN program.

Manages nursing program budget

Serves on college committees as requested

Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned in support of the nursing program and college
