Education Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree in liberal arts, adult education, K-12 education, or related field.
Experience Minimum: Previous experience working in a correctional facility. Two years of teaching experience in a postsecondary environment, preferably at a community college or two years of experience teaching in K-12 education.
Preferred Qualifications
Education Preferred: Master’s Degree in adult education, K-12 education, or related field.
Experience Preferred: Specific experience with online instruction and educational technology is preferred.
Position Description
Summary
Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to increase the educational level of adults through instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, and communication skills. The position is responsible for teaching day classes; preparing lesson plans; preparing tests; grading papers; and counseling/advising students.
Knowledge & Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities of Basic Skills instructors include:
- Teach assigned classes
- Create an effective learning environment
- Present instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course
- Ensure ABE/HSE students are meeting performance gains through pre and post-testing on a standardized exam (TABE)
- Maintain accurate attendance and scholastic records of students
- Use teaching methods designed for a variety of learning styles
- Use course text, outlines, syllabi and other curriculum materials in accordance with college and departmental guidelines
- Assist with maintaining a classroom environment emphasizing safety, good housekeeping, and equipment security
- Serve as an academic advisor to student
- Participate in communications with the college and department and meet deadlines as required
- Submit required reports
- Participate in the college’s assessment process
- Fulfill all contract provisions
- Maintain a high level of professionalism as a representative of the college
- Ability to demonstrate competence in areas expected to teach
- Ability to plan, organize and instruct quality educational programs
- Ability to communicate effectively with adult learners and to maintain good relationships with staff and students.
- Ability to exercise individual initiative, independent actions, and sound judgment
- Other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Language Skills
- Effective written and verbal communication skills are required.
Mathematical Skills
- Ability to perform basic math computations including adding, subtracting, multiplying and averaging all units of measure.
- Ability to compute fractions, percents and decimals.
Reasoning Ability
- Ability to use effective critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills.
Computer Skills
- To perform this job successfully an individual should be proficient in a Windows environment and have knowledge of email systems, MS Office Suite, Aztec, and online lab environments.
