Summary

This position is responsible for enabling students to make informed and intentional decisions regarding their academic and career goals by providing intensive, timely, and pro-active advising services. This includes serving as an academic advisor for undecided students in the General Education major, Transition Health Science students, two-year transfer students, as well as special non-degree seeking students. This position also carries out retention initiatives directly related to applied science majors, the change of major process, and promoting, assisting with curriculum of, and facilitating the college’s PowerU program. Additionally, this role involves maintaining and updating the Purpose Center webpage, promoting the Purpose Center as a key student resource, and implementing strategies to increase student awareness and engagement. To support student success, the Coordinator regularly meets with faculty, specifically applied science and continuing education programs, to learn earning potential, job demand growth, characteristics of career expectations, educational and licensure requirements, and additional opportunities within career fields.  Additionally, the Coordinator should collaborate with members of the Student Services team to implement student success strategies that assist with retention and goal completion.All functions of this position are expected to be carried out on both Pinehurst campus and the Hoke Center.

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:  

  • Promote and facilitate the PowerU program. This includes implementing strategies for participation, follow up, and reporting.
  • Serve as an academic advisor for: General Education students, two-year transfer students, Health Science transition students, and Special Non-Degree Seeking students.
  • Provide holistic advising and support services that align with the Guided Pathways concept and includes intentional career exploration to students as they select a program of study
  • Collaborate with applied science advisors, continuing education personnel, and job placement department to ensure a welcoming and helpful experience for our students as well as facilitating relationship building between students, SCC programs, and employers.
  • Provide registration services for applied science students in the absence of their faculty advisor as needed
  • Serve as back up for transfer student advising
  • Assist with retention initiatives directly related to applied science students
  • Support the college’s change of major process
  • Assist with advising request forms – ensuring students are connected with their assigned advisor or a College Navigator
  • Maintain the Purpose Center webpage and ensure that the center’s services are effectively promoted to students.
  • Monitor and respond to inquiries from the SCC Advising email account
  • Provide support for all QEP related initiatives
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director or VP of Student Services
