Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current or prior certification as a law enforcement officer issued by either the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission or the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission.
- A minimum of four (4) years of practical law enforcement experience as a certified criminal justice officer, or equivalent professional experience within the criminal justice system.
- Current North Carolina Criminal Justice General Instructor Certification.
Special Requirements:
- Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
- Current Qualified Assistant (QA) Certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission, or the ability to obtain QA certification within a reasonable timeframe as determined by the Director of BLET from the date of hire, and maintain certification thereafter.
- Must successfully complete the Qualified Assistant Orientation offered by the Commission if not previously completed.
- Must maintain eligibility to serve as a General Instructor, including meeting all Commission requirements for renewal.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching in a Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program.
- Specialty instructor certifications (e.g., Firearms, Hazardous Materials, Physical Fitness).
Position Description
- The position will remain open until filled unless institutional, statutory, or operational needs require the recruitment process to be changed or suspended.
- Under limited supervision, the Qualified Assistant (QA) supports the Director of Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) in planning, coordinating, and administering all aspects of the BLET program and related law enforcement training initiatives. The QA ensures compliance with all North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission requirements, assists with faculty and curriculum oversight, and provides both instructional and administrative support to facilitate the effective delivery of training.
- The QA plays a vital role in ensuring that law enforcement cadets receive high-quality training that meets state certification standards and prepares them for professional service.
This is a part-time position not to exceed 25 hours per week. The QA’s schedule will vary based on the BLET instructional schedule and general institutional needs. The QA must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including day, evening, and weekend hours as required. The final schedule will be assigned based on QA availability, program needs, and authorization from the Director of BLET.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Develop, organize, and oversee the EMS program and other continuing education courses, ensuring alignment with institutional and accreditation standards.
- Collaborate with instructors, staff, external agencies, and local EMS providers to identify training needs, develop curricula, and support departmental growth.
- Supervise and evaluate EMS classes, instructors, and operations, including classroom observations and adherence to policies.
- Lead the hiring, orientation, and mentoring of new instructors to ensure program quality and consistency.
- Administer the continuous quality review and improvement process for the EMS program, including long-term planning and program effectiveness evaluation.
- Prepare and manage course schedules each semester to meet the needs of students and local EMS agencies.
- Ensure compliance with records management requirements, including contracts, payroll, fee waivers, attendance, schedules, and student documentation.
- Coordinate and ensure adherence to accreditation, certification, and compliance requirements from NCCCS, NCOEMS, CoAEMSP, CAAHEP, and other governing agencies.
- Serve as a resource for EMS instructors and provide guidance to address challenges and foster professional development.
- Facilitate the selection and ordering of textbooks and instructional materials.
- Develop and implement student recruitment and retention plans.
- Coordinate and conduct specialized EMS training programs (e.g., CPR, ACLS, PALS).
- Monitor student fieldwork, ensuring accurate completion of documentation by preceptors and students.
- Evaluate course materials and instructional methodologies to improve effectiveness and meet performance standards.
- Maintain the organization and inventory of EMS supplies and equipment.
- Establish and maintain advisory committees to support program development and community engagement.
- Promote the EMS program through collaboration with marketing to develop and distribute promotional materials.
- Represent the EMS program at college, local, and state meetings, and serve on relevant committees.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance performance and maintain required certifications.
- Provide limited instruction as needed to meet program needs and maintain personal credentialing requirements.
- Assist in preparing and managing the program’s annual budget.
- Maintain a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends, to meet program demands.
- Foster an inclusive learning environment that values diversity and encourages the participation of all students and community members.
- Serve as the primary contact between instructional staff and MCC to identify and address deficiencies or concerns, enforcing disciplinary actions as directed by the appropriate supervisor, Senior Administrator, and Human Resources.
- Attend College meetings and serves on committees as appropriate.
