Minimum Qualifications
- An Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in criminal justice, law enforcement, emergency management, public safety, or a related field.
- Four years of law enforcement, security, public safety, military law enforcement/security, emergency management, or closely related experience.
- Experience as a Field Training Officer, instructor, supervisor, training coordinator, or similar role is preferred.
- Experience in field training, classroom instruction, emergency response, report writing, de-escalation, security operations, employee development, or public safety administration is preferred.
- Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate valid North Carolina driver’s license with an acceptable driving record as required by the College.
- Ability to obtain and maintain appropriate trainer/instructor certifications and/or licenses necessary to provide instruction in CPR, AED, First Aid, OC Pepper Spray, basic self-defense, Narcan, and Stop the Bleed within a timeframe established by the Department.
Preferred Qualifications
- Field Training Officer certification or documented FTO experience.
- Professional instructor or train-the-trainer experience.
- Experience developing or administering a Field Training Program.
- Experience conducting scenario-based or practical public safety training.
- Existing instructor certifications related to public safety, emergency response, or medical response are preferred but not required at the time of appointment.
Position Description
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Develop, coordinate, implement, maintain, and periodically revise the Department’s training program and annual training schedule.
- Manage and maintain the Field Training Program, including orientation, training phases, performance standards, evaluations, remedial training, and completion documentation.
- Coordinate assignment of newly hired personnel to qualified Field Training Officers.
- Review Field Training documentation to ensure supervisors and FTOs are actively documenting officer performance, training progress, deficiencies, corrective instruction, and completion of required competencies.
- Monitor newly hired officers throughout field training, keep a record of training logs for each security officer and provide progress updates to departmental leadership on meeting performance objectives.
- Identify performance or knowledge deficiencies and coordinate appropriate remedial training.
- Coordinate and provide professional development, in-service, refresher, remedial, and scenario-based training.
- Develop and provide training in areas including radio procedures, report writing, building checks, patrol procedures, emergency response, active assailant response, de-escalation, mental health crisis response, medical emergencies, access control, traffic and pedestrian safety, crime prevention, customer service, and Department Standard Operating Procedures.
- Obtain and maintain appropriate trainer/instructor certifications necessary to provide instruction in CPR, AED, First Aid, OC Pepper Spray, basic self-defense, Narcan, and Stop the Bleed.
- Develop lesson plans, presentations, practical exercises, scenario-based training, written assessments, quick-reference materials, and other instructional resources.
- Coordinate emergency preparedness training for Public Safety & Security personnel and assist with safety training for college faculty, staff, and students as directed.
- Maintain accurate records of employee training, certifications, recertifications, continuing education, and professional development.
- Monitor certification expiration dates and coordinate required training and recertification.
- Ensure personnel are appropriately trained in departmental equipment, responsibilities, policies, and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Conduct roll-call briefings and targeted training as needed.
- Assume responsibility for shift operations when training responsibilities and scheduled training efforts have been met and in the absence of the regularly assigned shift supervisor.
- Work with shift supervisors to support and provide coaching for security officer development.
- When serving in this capacity, provide operational supervision and direction to assigned personnel, coordinate daily assignments and campus coverage, address routine personnel and operational matters, and ensure continuity of Department operations.
- Ensure that assuming shift supervision does not interfere with required training, Field Training Program administration, certification management, or other priority responsibilities assigned to the Senior Lieutenant.
- Observe operational performance when necessary to evaluate training effectiveness and identify additional training needs.
- Work collaboratively with Lieutenants, Sergeants, Field Training Officers, and departmental leadership to identify performance trends and training needs.
- Review incident reports, call logs, and operational activities when appropriate to identify training opportunities.
- Provide recommendations to the Director/Chief regarding officer development, training deficiencies, FTO performance, and improvements to departmental training programs.
- Assist with developing and revising Department policies, procedures, emergency procedures, operational guidelines, and training materials.
- Assist with crime prevention, safety awareness, emergency preparedness, and community outreach programs.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding employee performance, evaluations, investigations, personnel matters, and other sensitive information.
- Maintain professional working relationships with students, faculty, staff, law enforcement agencies, emergency responders, and community partners.
- Provide operational assistance during emergencies or significant incidents when required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
