Expected Work Hours

Minimum of a 40-hour work week established on a schedule to allow the employee to adequately fulfill the assigned duties and responsibilities. Hours on evenings and/or weekends may be necessary on occasion. Summer schedules may vary to enable four-day or four and one half-day work weeks. Required Travel: This position requires daily travel between campus buildings including travel between the main campus, the Orange County Campus, the Northern Durham Center and other satellite campus requiring computer assistance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Have a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Associate Degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Business Computer Programming, Computer Engineering Technology, Microcomputer Technology, or Electrical Technology or four years work experience in the field.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of professional experience providing technical support in a desktop, help desk, or campus/enterprise IT environment.

Position Description

Do Great Things! Durham Technical Community College is hiring a Technology Support Specialist in the Client Services,  Information Technology Services Department. The Technology Support Specialist is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and overall usability of designated campus technology. This role requires a strong customer-service focus and a proactive approach to identifying, preventing, and resolving technical issues for end users. The specialist ensures proper integration of hardware, operating systems, and application software, while troubleshooting and resolving issues consistent with the industry’s best practices. 

Examples of Duties

  1. Configure and install designated hardware and software;
  2. Performs routine technical repair College computers, printers, and associated equipment;
  3. Performs routine technical repair and maintenance of designated AV/IT equipment and maintain a departmental database for documentation;
  4. Integrates audiovisual equipment and related computer systems as needed;
  5. Maintain an adequate inventory of parts and supplies for day to day operations;
  6. Maintain an approved list of work items to be accomplished;
  7. Ensures assigned work is completed in a timely manner;
  8. Understand user priorities and implement modifications as needed;
  9. Maintain composure while discussing difficult problems with users;
  10. Maintain all hardware in designated academic labs;
  11. Suggest changes that will increase responsiveness to customers;
  12. Communicate status to users, project managers, and the Director on a regular basis;
  13. Develop test plans for troubleshooting moderate to complex user problems;
  14. Make suggestions for improving user support and increasing equipment mean time to failure;
  15. Proactively looks for possible issues before they become problems;
  16. Maintains a clean and organized work environment; 
  17. Mentor work study students in Desktop Support roles;
  18. Performs other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Executive Director, Information Technology Services; or Campus Leadership in meeting the needs of the college.
