Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

CVTEA Required:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent.
  • Must be a licensed veterinarian.
  • Have at least three years of experience in clinical practice or veterinary technology education.
  • Demonstrate competence in curriculum development, program administration, evaluation, instruction, and advising.
  • Possess strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in a community college or higher education setting.
  • Familiarity with CVTEA accreditation process and requirements.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Description

 

Faculty are expected to work a minimum of 40 hours per week, with a minimum of 20-24 on-campus hours Monday through Friday. This position may involve day, evening, and/or weekend hours, and during certain periods, such as advising and registration, faculty may work more than the minimum on-campus hours. Faculty members are focused on student success and support the college’s mission by facilitating student learning both inside and outside of the classroom through high-quality instruction, academic support, and informed advising.

 

 

Example of Duties

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching and Instructional Responsibilities:
    • Teach 20-24 contact hours per semester, including in-class, lab, and clinical sessions.
    • Develop and implement the Veterinary Medical Technology curriculum in alignment with CVTEA standards, ensuring up-to-date knowledge of veterinary technology practices.
    • Prepare, maintain, and distribute course syllabi and materials that meet accreditation standards.
    • Create dynamic instructional environments that promote positive student engagement and retention.
    • Evaluate student progress and provide regular grade updates through the college’s learning management system (e.g., Moodle).
    • Supervise, mentor, and provide academic support to students, including office hours and lab hours as needed.
    • Provide informed advising, including guidance on degree requirements, career opportunities, and college policies.
  2. Curriculum Development and Continuous Improvement:
    • Assist in continuous evaluation and improvement of course objectives, syllabi, and teaching strategies.
    • Modify existing courses or develop new ones as necessary to meet evolving accreditation standards, regulatory changes, and industry trends.
    • Ensure that course competencies meet the appropriate levels for program graduation and CVTEA requirements.
  3. Program and Department Management:
    • Oversee inventory control for materials, supplies, equipment, and tools needed for instruction, including the ordering, distribution, and rotation of lab supplies.
    • Manage departmental budgets and resources efficiently, including preparing requisitions for purchases.
    • Ensure compliance with state, federal, and accreditation regulations, including maintaining licensure and certifications.
    • Supervise and assess student progress, ensuring that all students meet required competencies.
    • Assist the chairperson in accreditation activities, marketing, recruitment, registration, and retention strategies for the Veterinary Medical Technology program.
    • Work with external stakeholders, including veterinary clinics and professional organizations, to build partnerships and support the program.
  4. Animal Care and Colony Management:
    • Manage relationships with animal shelters to maintain a supply of colony animals for student labs.
    • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures for animal care, including quarantine and isolation procedures.
    • Coordinate the rotational use of colony animals in labs to maximize student learning while ensuring humane care.
    • Maintain accurate records for all colony animals, ensuring compliance with USDA and other regulatory standards.
    • Coordinate with the Department Head to ensure appropriate animal species and numbers are available for labs, and monitor animal health, including treatments and preventative care.
  5. Administrative and Collaborative Responsibilities:
    • Assist with registration, orientation, and advising sessions for students, ensuring they understand degree requirements and career opportunities.
    • Participate in departmental meetings, faculty and staff meetings, and college activities.
    • Serve on college committees as assigned, contributing to the development of college policies and strategies.
    • Assist in maintaining records and reports related to program performance, student outcomes, and compliance.
    • Actively participate in professional organizations to remain current in the field and enhance professional development.
  6. Other Responsibilities:
    • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Department Head that support the College’s mission and initiatives.
    • Maintain records in practice management software and ensure compliance with DEA and DHHS regulations, including controlled substance handling and biannual inventories.
    • Coordinate and participate in outreach activities, such as recruitment fairs and community events, to promote the Veterinary Medical Technology program.

Additional Expectations:

  • Faculty must maintain current industry licensure and credentials, including earning annual Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and completing any necessary certifications.
  • Faculty should work closely with the Department Head to ensure smooth operations and effective communication within the department and across the College.
  • Faculty are expected to hold five (5) office hours per week and work the required 35 hours per week, including virtual hours, as outlined in the faculty guidelines.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

 

Supplemental Information

 

Work Environment:

  • The position may require work during evenings or weekends, especially during peak times such as advising and registration periods.
  • Faculty may be expected to engage in both on-campus and off-campus activities, including clinical placements, recruitment, and outreach events.

Work Schedule:

Permanent full-time faculty (who are not Department Heads or otherwise required to work 12 months) receive contracts for nine-month periods within a fiscal year and may be contracted on a month-to-month basis in summer per instructional needs.
