Education and/or Experience

CVTEA Required:

  • Associate’s/Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Technology with credentialing as a Registered Veterinary Technician.
  • Must be a credentialed veterinary technician.
  • Have at least three years of experience in clinical practice or veterinary technology education.
  • Demonstrate competence in curriculum development, program administration, evaluation, instruction, and advising.
  • Possess strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

Position Description

 

 

Faculty are expected to work a minimum of 40 hours per week, with a minimum of 20-24 on -campus hours Monday through Friday (position may include day and/or evening work hours). In certain program areas and during certain periods, such as advising ad registration, Faculty may work more than the minimum on-campus hours. Focused on student success, Faculty support the colleges mission by facilitating student learning in and outside of the classroom through high-quality instruction, academic support, and informed advising.

 
 
Example of Duties:

 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching Responsibilities:
    • This position is for the primary instructor of the Laboratory Techniques series which includes Laboratory Techniques I, II, and III. Additional courses may also be taught based on departmental needs.
    • Teach 20-24 contact hours per semester, including in-class, lab, and/or clinical sessions.
    • Create a dynamic instructional environment that incorporates Veterinary Medicine Technology concepts, promoting a positive, interactive, and inclusive learning experience.
    • Utilize various teaching methods to ensure students demonstrate CVTEA competencies at the appropriate level for program graduation.
    • Develop a variety of activities, assignments, and assessments to meet course objectives and student learning outcomes.
    • Maintain a Moodle course for each class taught, including a syllabus, gradebook, and course content.
    • Grade all assignments in a timely manner, ensuring compliance with the grading policy.
    • Provide personalized, constructive feedback on assignments to help students improve their work.
    • Respond to all student communication within two business days.
    • Report attendance weekly and utilize the early alert system to identify students who may need additional support.
  2. Advising and Student Support:
    • Meet with each assigned advisee at least once per semester to discuss educational, career, and personal goals.
    • Assist students in exploring career options and building professional relationships.
    • Review and approve student educational plans, ensuring they align with program and graduation requirements.
    • Refer students to institutional and community resources as necessary to support their success.
    • Actively collaborate with academic success coaches to provide comprehensive support and resources to students.
    • Foster a culture of care and advocacy through compassion, inclusion, opportunity, and integrity.
  3. Curriculum Development and Improvement:
    • Develop and update course content to ensure relevance, incorporating the latest industry standards, rules, and regulations.
    • Participate in the development of new courses and the review and improvement of existing courses.
    • Ensure that courses meet the CVTEA standards and other accreditation requirements.
    • Actively participate in department, college, or system meetings, and collaborate with faculty to maintain accreditation standards.
  4. Institutional and Program Responsibilities:
    • Actively engage with college committees as assigned, and participate in institutional activities, such as recruitment and retention efforts for the Veterinary Medical Technology program.
    • Attend and contribute to advisory board meetings and maintain professional relationships with industry, business, and professional agencies.
    • Maintain current industry licensure and credentials, including earning Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
    • Stay current in the field of Veterinary Technology and participate in professional development activities.
    • Assist in the identification and recruitment of facilities to host students for Work-Based Learning (WBL) opportunities.
    • Maintain program and/or college accreditation standards.
  5. Animal Care and Colony Management:
    • Coordinate the use of colony animals in labs, ensuring humane treatment and compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., USDA, CVTEA).
    • Monitor and document the health and wellness of colony animals, including routine health checks and treatments.
  6. Administrative and Collaborative Duties:
    • Submit required records and forms in a timely manner according to college policies and procedures.
    • Assist in the preparation of reports for accreditation or regulatory bodies.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Head or supervisor to support the college’s goals and objectives.
    • Maintain a weekly schedule of 35 hours on campus, including five (5) office hours, and communicate availability to supervisors in advance.
    • Participate in faculty training, including obtaining and maintaining Moodle training and other relevant certifications.
  7. Professional Development and Engagement:
    • Actively participate in professional organizations related to Veterinary Medical Technology.
    • Maintain industry credentials and participate in ongoing professional development to stay current with the latest advancements in Veterinary Technology and education.
    • Attend departmental, divisional, and collegewide meetings to stay informed about institutional priorities and opportunities.

 

Work Environment:

  • Faculty may be required to work during evenings, weekends, or outside of regular office hours based on the needs of students, program activities, or special events.
  • Faculty will collaborate with faculty, staff, and external stakeholders to ensure the program meets accreditation standards and delivers high-quality instruction.

 

Permanent full-time faculty (who are not Department Heads or otherwise required to work 12 months) receive contracts for nine-month periods within a fiscal year and may be contracted on a month-to-month basis in summer per instructional needs.

 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
