The Purpose

The Vice President for Instruction is the college’s chief academic officer, serves on the president’s Executive Leadership Team, and reports directly to the Executive VP of Programs. This position is responsible for the overall vision and direction of the college’s instructional and training programs and instructional support at the Henderson County Campus (main) Health Sciences Center and the Transylvania County Campus. The instructional division consists of Arts and Sciences, Business and Service Careers, and Health Sciences – as well as the Library and Teaching & Learning Center.

  • Oversees the college’s academic credit programs, and its library support.
  • Leads the long-range curriculum planning efforts, ensuring that the college’s instructional programs reflect the educational needs of the community.
  • Ensures the integration of technological advancements into curriculum education while maintaining exemplary academic standards.
  • Ensure that full and part-time faculty are academically and technically qualified and diversely trained. And, that they meet the standards/requirements as described by the accrediting body and by individual program accreditors.
  • Develop the annual academic calendar in cooperation with the academic deans and the approval of the President.
  • Works closely with the Vice-President for Economic and Workforce Development/Continuing Education (EWD/CE) to develop educational and training programs that reflect the workforce needs of area business and industry and support economic development.
  • Develops and implements programs which support student success in completing programs which meet and/or exceed designated state performance standards.
  • Provides college-wide leadership in establishing innovative partnerships with local school systems, four-year colleges and universities, and other education providers.
  • Develops and implements a program for professional development for faculty.
  • Promotes the growth, development, and improvement of distance learning and traditional instruction delivery methods.
  • Works with departmental deans and provides oversight of course schedules with regard to student needs.
  • Develops, monitors, and plans effective utilization of budget resources for the division.
  • Ensures the college’s compliance with all accreditation agencies which affect the instructional areas of the college.
  • Serves as the college’s primary liaison to the NCCCS on all instructional matters.
  • Implements college policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that cross-disciplinary collaboration takes place across academic divisions and within academic and administrative divisions and supports the one-college model of operation.
  • Guides and supports the college advising model.
  • Uses data to guide new and existing programs and create a vision for future programs.
  • Serves on committees in support of the College’s mission.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the College Executive VP and President.
  • Ability to use data and stakeholder feedback to assess program effectiveness and relevance.

Qualifications:Required Education:  Master’s degree from an accredited college or university, doctorate preferred.

Required Experience: Teaching in a college discipline, community college preferred; Seven years of progressive responsibility in higher education administration.  Proven success in leading people, managing change, strategic planning, measuring results and effective budgeting in a complex work environment.

  • Ability to conduct long-range planning relative to instructional and training programs which achieve designated goals and objectives.
  • Experience in working with community and business leaders and promoting institutional programs.

  • Commitment to the use of technology in the delivery of instruction.
  • Evidence of innovative practices in the development and delivery of programs of service.
  • A leadership style that is collaborative, visionary, and open.
  • Broad knowledge of educational best practices in community colleges and a demonstrated commitment to the continuous improvement and professional development of college faculty.
  • A commitment to program assessment and the institutional effectiveness planning process.
  • Knowledge of accreditation compliance standards; experience with reaccreditation preferred.
  • Active involvement in professional associations related to the position.

Knowledge and Skills: Possess strong personal and professional integrity, effective verbal and written communication skills, and a commitment to safety. Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite or similar products, database systems, College email and website, and other computer applications associated with the position.
