To Brian Pham, one meaning of freedom is being able to pursue a good education. Pham, who was born in Vietnam and came to the United States in 1998 with his parents and sister. He is the 2013 North Carolina Community College System's Dallas Herring Award recipient.

Cape Fear Community College graduate Jamir Jumoke was selected as the recipient of the 2014 Dallas Herring Achievement Award by the N.C. Community College System.

Brenda Lopez

Brenda Lopez

Brenda Lopez Benitez is the personification of Dr. Dallas Herring’s philosophy of “taking people where they are and carrying them as far as they can go.” Brenda is the ninth of eleven children and was born in Mexico, the daughter of a migrant farm worker.

Stella Galyean has been named the statewide winner of the Dallas Herring Achievement Award from the North Carolina Community College System for her accomplishments at A-B Tech Community College.

Willie Jackson Corbett

Mr. Willie Corbett, a survivor of a motorcycle accident, a victim of quadriplegic paralysis, a conscious and thoughtful parent aiming to teach his children and grandchildren the value of education, is worthy of the Dallas Herring Award for 2016.

My name is Najma Hasan and I am proud to be a student in the prestigious nursing program at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. It is a challenging program, but I am working very hard. Today, I know my future is bright. But it didn't always look so bright.
