In my youth, I attended college for a semester or two, but quit. I found myself in an abusive relationship, working in a series of unsatisfying and poorly paid jobs. Escaping that part of my life, my priorities changed when I became a military spouse.

I am a military widow and the mother of five children. After my husband was killed in action in Iraq, I witnessed the lack of services for injured soldiers. Realizing how much I wanted to help others, I decided to go back to school to become a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA).

I have always had a lifelong love of learning and upon graduating from high school in 1981, my intention was to complete a college degree, but life intervened and I found myself divorced, raising two children alone.

In 1999 I left South Africa and came to America to make a better life for myself by driving 18-wheelers country-wide. I knew America was the place I wanted to be. My dream came true when I met the man of my dreams who was serving his country in the US Army 3rd Special Forces Group.

In August of 1998, I enrolled into my first year of college. This was exciting to me because I became the first of my mother's children to enroll into college. Unfortunately, I decided to discontinue my pursuit of a degree when I became pregnant.
