Michelle Goble had a revelation in 2011. For a little more than a year, she had worked at Westfield Elementary School, helping kindergarten through fifth grade students with their classroom studies and then with second and third graders who needed help with reading.
When cutbacks in educational funding eliminated her position, Michelle took a step back to see where she would go. Looking at her work history and her interests, Michelle decided to go back to school to complete her accounting degree. She chose Surry Community College.
Michelle had not been in a classroom setting as a student in 25 years. The road ahead looked long, but the professors at SCC encouraged her. Along the way, Michelle endured a sickness that forced her to postpone some classes; her husband's grandmother moving in after suffering congestive heart failure and more. Michelle focused on graduation. Her professors were always positive.
Michelle fought through work situations, family health issues, a daughter moving to college, a son entering high school and more during her SCC career. She also decided not to stop at wine degree at SCC - she will complete her accounting degree in May and a business administration degree in December.
