Position Description
Job Description:
The ideal candidate is visionary and strategic in approach, adept at critical thinking and creative problem solving, and is committed to the learning college philosophy. The Associate Dean shall be responsible for the operation of the College’s arts and sciences divisions and shall report directly to the Vice President of Instruction and Student Services. The Associate Dean will be responsible for (1) Managing the overall quality and future directions of the arts and sciences curricula; (2) Articulating a clear vision for associate-level degree programs in arts and sciences and providing compelling leadership to realize the vision; (3) Encouraging and facilitating faculty development; (4) Supervising faculty recruitment and hiring processes; (5) Executing responsible budget planning and management of state and other funding; (6) Managing internal administrative operations and resources; (7) Building upon established relationships with various constituencies, colleges, and services; and (8) Promoting a positive, diverse, and excellent environment for faculty and students. The Associate Dean shall be responsible for the operation of the College’s arts & sciences programs and shall report directly to the Vice President of Instruction and Student Services.
NOTE: Hours vary as required to support the program. The employee occasionally works on evenings and weekends.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Cooperating with Vice-President for Instruction and Student Services to ensure the maintenance of effective arts and sciences programs
• Assisting the VP of Instruction and Student Services with acreditor’s compliance issues and ongoing preparation for reaccreditation.
• Supporting the College’s progress with the QEP and making recommendations to the VP of Instruction and Student Services regarding ongoing implementation, adjustments, etc.
• Facilitating, with arts and sciences division chairpersons, effective instructional programs through faculty orientation, faculty assignment, faculty evaluation, and satisfactory performance of duties.
• Preparing the class schedule for arts and sciences programs with recommendations from division chairpersons, Coordinator – Curriculum Programs, Early College Liaisons, Success Advisors, and the Vice-President of Instruction and Student Services.
• Supporting the academic division’s compliance with SCC’s ADA plan.
• Determining priorities for equipment supplies and materials and making recommendations to the appropriate individual(s) or committee(s) for their procurement.
• Reviewing relevant data—-NCCCS Performance Measures, grade distributions, enrollment, retention, and so forth—to determine areas needing improvement and to propose strategies for improvement.
• Evaluating, updating, and implementing, with division chairpersons, curriculum and course content in arts and sciences programs.
• Assisting the Vice-President of Instruction and Student Services in evaluating credits for students transferring and determining candidates for graduation in the arts and sciences programs.
• Coordinating and approving travel requests for faculty in arts and sciences programs.
• Promoting best practices in advising to chairs and faculty and providing training as needed.
• Recruiting and screening faculty and staff for recommendation for employment.
• Reviewing reappointment recommendations from division chairpersons in the arts and sciences programs and making appropriate recommendations.
• Assisting Student Services and the CTE coordinator in college recruiting activities.
• Working with representatives of transfer institutions, including transfer admissions staff, to ensure an effective process for students.
• Working closely with student services staff to ensure availability of current program information to faculty and students.
• Conducting annual program reviews for arts and sciences programs.
• In coordination with the VP of I&SS, assisting division chairs with personnel matters, including progressive disciplinary procedures
• Maintaining a file of course outlines for all credit courses in the arts and sciences programs.
• Conducting class observations and evaluative conferences with each division chair in the arts and sciences programs.
• Working closely with the Dean of Instruction Support on ACA and online course content. Conducting ACA class observations.
• Arranging and presiding over meetings of the division chairpersons in the arts and sciences programs.
• Preparing and submitting program applications for NCCCS approval as needed.
• Cooperating with the VP of I&SS on non-credit and credit courses.
• Participating actively in the planning process and serving as a member of the Planning Committee.
• Serving on the President’s Cabinet and any other assigned committees as needed.
• Maintain a clean and safe work area.
• Performing other duties as assigned by the VP of I&SS.
