How to Apply

The Dean serves as a leader with administrative oversight for the department including Emergency Medical Science, Fire Protection and Law Enforcement for both Curriculum (CU) and Continuing Education (CE) on a variety of student, faculty, budget, planning and personnel matters. Administrative oversight includes the coordination and development of long- and short-range plans for assigned programs, evaluating and giving feedback to faculty/instructors on instructional performance, and development of initiatives to ensure faculty remain current in their respective disciplines as well as college policy and procedures. Ensure the utmost safety protocols are followed in all training scenarios and building and maintaining strong relationships with community partners in all three disciplines is crucial to the success of this position.

Student Engagement

  • Advise students concerning course requirements, long-range academic plans, and career opportunities
  • Supports all college advising initiatives
  • Ensures that student support services are available to every student throughout their academic and training and that students are fully supported.

Program Administration

  • Establishes and sets goals for the department with input from community stakeholders in all three disciplines in our service area (e.g. Henderson and Transylvania County public safety entities), department faculty, coordinators, chairs, directors, Vice President of Economic and Workforce Development, the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS), and all other appropriate stakeholders and accrediting bodies.
  • Ensures the planning, development, supervision, and evaluation of all Public Safety Training courses and programs for curriculum (CU) and continuing education (CE) in consultation with the Vice President of Economic and Workforce Development
  • Implements and reviews curriculum changes; writes new program proposals; monitors new program development; evaluates programs and makes appropriate recommendations.
  • Promotes a vibrant program review process and utilizes review findings to invigorate and improve Public Safety programs of study.
  • Ensures maintenance of course outlines, materials, and records, including textbook, equipment and software selection for CU and CE Public Safety Training programs.
  • Ensures development and updating of articulation agreements as applicable to program areas
  • Coordinates and manages required contracts and external program agreements
  • Ensures compliance with all college policies and procedures including those related to student safety
  • Works with all public safety faculty coordinators to ensure safety protocols for all training exercises are enforced, evaluated, and audited on a regular basis
  • Holds all faculty accountable to ensure safety protocols for all training exercises are enforced, evaluated, and audited on a regular basis
  • Develops, monitors, and plans effective utilization of budget resources for the department in consultation with the Vice President of Economic and Workforce Development
  • Assists with the Development and maintenance of contracts/agreements/placement options for required educational and field experiences
  • Ensures advisory committees meet at least twice per year in all assigned areas and uses the information for continuous improvement.

Accreditation and Assessment

  • Ensures that accreditation standards for assigned curriculum programs and faculty meet the criteria of the appropriate accreditation agency(s)

Personnel

  • Supervises all programs and personnel assigned to Public Safety Training, both Curriculum (CU) and Continuing Education (CE)
  • Recruits and selects part-time instructors in Public Safety Training and participates in the recruitment and selection process for full-time instructors college-wide in consultation with Human Resources
  • Evaluates the performance of personnel reporting directly to the Dean of Public Safety Training
  • Ensures that classroom observations (both online and seated) of full- and part-time faculty are completed according to the appropriate accrediting body
  • Develops and coordinate faculty development and training activities
  • Ensures all required documentation is collected for new hires prior to the first day of work in partnership with Human Resources and the Director of Continuing Education Operations

Marketing and Recruiting

  • Recruit at local high schools in Henderson and Transylvania Counties
  • Ensures that marketing, recruiting, and retention efforts are expectations for all members of the department and program areas.
  • Assists in the creation and maintenance of brochures, mailings, databases, and directories as needed

Community Engagement

  • Maintains relationships with local public safety departments with regular visits; attends appropriate public safety meetings in Henderson and Transylvania Counties; establishes and maintains working relationships with local public safety systems
  • Represent the College at appropriate meetings, activities, and conferences

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures compliance with policies of the College, the NC Community College System, and applicable

State and Federal agencies

  • Maintains technical competencies necessary to the job function
  • Serves on campus and community committees
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Economic and Workforce Development

Qualifications

Education
Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in a discipline area of course work required in programs offered by the College or a Master’s degree with sufficient discipline course work at the Master’s level (18 semester hours minimum).

Experience
All persons must provide verifiable and relevant professional experience in a work-place setting or demonstrated instructional/teaching environment. Supervisory experience in a community college setting is preferred.  Experience in the field of Emergency Management is preferred.

Physical Demands

The ability to perform all duties associated with the position including, but not limited to lifting, prolonged standing, sitting, bending, stooping, and operating or performing work with associated tools and machines. This position does work outdoors in inclement weather.
